| First Dental Cleaning Hi all! I’m super nervous about taking my girl, Ari, to her first dental cleaning. She’s 3 years old and only 3 pounds so the thought of putting her under makes me worry a ton (I’m sure you can relate ^_^ since we all worry about our babes). Cost is an issue too, so I’ve been weighing my options. Her current vet has a starting price of $400 and uses propofol and sevoflourine (I may not be spelling these right). There is a veterinary dental clinic about 20 min away that quoted me $219 - but they use Ace and Torb, Propofol, and medicam if needed for pain. There is a loose tooth that needs to be extracted too, so the costs will actually be higher. But I also worry about her reactions to the different anesthetics. Do you guys have any experiences with your Yorkies reacting best to one? |

| The price seems a little high but Oregon may be different than Tennessee. Cleanings and extractions around here is less than 200 almost anywhere. Our little max underwent dental cleanings around every 2 years. He actually had to have teeth extracted every time. Over the coarse of ten years he only had 6 left. He managed well though. His little tongue would hang out on one side a little bit after he lost the last few bottoms. He was cute. We kept his vet check ups regularly but that didn't prevent him from losing his teeth. Our vet said it was in genetics. I've always wondered about the tube going down their little throats though. MAx developed a cough a few years back and eventually was diagnosed with collapsed trachea The two may not be related but I'd probably discuss it with your vet what the negatives are. Good luck and merry Christmas Last edited by W4KSL; 12-20-2017 at 11:12 AM. |

| Do those prices include pre surgery blood work? That is extremely important. You really have to go with what feels right for you. Here in Maryland where it is very expensive I paid $800 for my 10 year olds dental and one tooth had to be pulled. I would make sure they have some way of keeping her temp. up like a heated table or warmers and I would make sure that someones job is just to monitor her vitals. I would also make sure they put an IV cath in that way if something does happen which is not normal they can help right away and don't have to take the time to put one in. Also I would do fluids.

| Dental I can understand how you are concerned about the procedure in such a small baby. But done correctly by a good vet, I am sure she will be fine. As for the price, that seems reasonable. The extra cost may well be worth it to include the extras that Lovetodream suggests. I too think the extras are essential. In the end my cost for a full dental, pre tests etc etc for my nine year old boy is more like $700! But he does well and is safe. |

Jackson, 9 years old, just had a dental and 6 teeth pulled. It was a $150 visit for the pre-op bloodwork. Then for the dental, the bill was around $700. It was worth every penny. Dental health is SO important. I was a nervous wreck too though- he came out fine even though I was super anxious about it and he gets bad anxiety at vets etc too so it wasn't the easiest on him, but after a day, he was back to himself.
