| New puppy hasn't peed or pooped..advise? Hi there! We adopted a 6 month old new yorkie puppy yesterday afternoon around 4-5pm and brought her home. Since then, she has not peed or pooped! She's ate her food this morning and has drank water. We take her on 20 minute walks and all she does is sit and stare at us. It's super cute, but she doesn't go potty! I'm worried of course since she's new to us. Any advise? Is this normal? I'm going to have her get checked by the vet this week too. Thank you! |

| Welcome to YT and congrats on your new baby. The very first thing one does when they bring home a new dog is get the pup regardless of their age to your vet within 24 to 48 hours for a full check up. Do you know if this pup had all her vaccines, that you have her out and walking about. Do you know if she was potty trained for out doors or pad trained. Does she know how to walk on a leash, you say she sits and looks at you. Have you kept her on the same food she was eating where she was living. How much does she weigh. When bringing home a new dog there is an adjust period for the dog. She has to adjust to you a stranger in her life, a new home with new smells, voices, sounds, rules, schedules. that's a lot of adjusting for a young baby. She is scared and confused. In a few hours she will have been with you for 24 hours, she may not know where the proper potty place is, if you are giving her free roam of the house I would start looking to see if she made someplace. If you are crating her with a pad in the crate and she has not peed or pooped by the morning I would get her to the vet asap. Please keep us posted.

| Thank you for the reply! I took her out an hour after posting, we walked around for 20 minutes brought her in and she peed on the floor! Then she peed again on a puppy pad near her bowl, and once again when we walked her out to the park. I believe she just needed to adjust, but I was worried from things I would read online. I plan to call tomorrow to get her into the vet. Other than that she hasn't pooped. So we're just waiting on that now. But yes, she's up to date with her shots. She walks nicely on a leash, but when I take her off she follows nicely as well. I think they were training her on puppy pads. Now that she's going potty, do we just use the puppy pads and slowly move them outside? To house train her? She's such a good girl, I'm so excited! And happy she's going potty! |

| Happy to hear she peed several times. Please see if you can get your vet to check her out ASAP. If I read correctly you're taking her off her leash when you're outside. Not a wise choice. Yorkies are very prey motivated, you and the area is new to her, if she sees a squirrel, bird, cat, even a blowing leaf she may chase after it. Yorkies are very fast runners, you can loose her, she could get hit by a car. Please, do not let her loose with or without her leash on her.

| To train potty outside she needs to be on a food and walk schedule. I had big yorkies, weights over 9 pounds, I fed my puppies twice a day 1/2 the recommended amount at 7:30AM, 20 minutes later I walked them, even if they had made on the pad, I walked them anyway. Dogs are creatures of habit, the have built in alarm clocks, if you keep to a schedule of feeding then walking they will learn when they will go for their potty walks. I came home from work at 4:30PM took them to the curb and they would pee, 5PM they were fed the other half of the recommended daily food, 20 minutes later they were walked. Feed same time in the morning and evening, walk same time morning and evening even if she made on the pad, walk her anyway, this way she learns what time she gets walked. Just before you go to bed walk her again. Key word is "schedule" you must be diligent with this and have patience no scolding, no harsh voice tone. Some dogs will make 30 minutes after eating, this is going to be a trial and error period until you see how long it takes her to make after she eats. If her previous owner was pad training her make sure you leave a pad down for her until she is 100% house broken. Keep her in a confined area while she is using pads, no free roam of your home. Once she is 100% outdoor trained then you can let her be free in the house. Remember "schedule" is key in house breaking.
