| 2 Seizures and foaming after first vaccination and worming!! Hey guys!! I've got some really worrying news. Start of this week I took my 3 new born yorkies to get their first injections. (They were 8 weeks and 1 day old at this point.) I went to 'VacciPet' which operates as drop in session in 'Just For Pets' stores, to get their first injections done and get treatment for worms and fleas. I have 2 boys and 1 girl. So the injections went fine. All the pups seemed fine and didn't even cry during the whole process, the lady doing the injection felt them and did a brief observation and didn't point out any worrying sings. During the procedure I only had them get their first injection done and they each took a worming tablet. We still haven't applied the flea treatment as we were advised to wait 2 weeks before doing so, so that the pups don't get overwhelmed. It's been 3 days now and all the pups seemed fine. However, last couple of days we have noticed a slight behaviour change in the little girl (she was the smallest only weighing 1kg.) (The other two boys came to 1.1kg and 1.5kg) Before she was the calmest one out of the bunch and occasionally joined in with playing with her brothers. But since the injection she was the one which was doing the most amount of chasing and playing. However last night we noticed that she had foam around her mouth and started behaving more wildly than normal. (this was Thursday evening, as I'm writing this its Friday early morning, so 3 days in total since the vaccinations) At this point all the local vets were closed so we did a little searching around the internet and she didn't show many serious symptoms which suggested a serious problem. However...3-4 hours later while all the pups were asleep, I was just watching them and suddenly the little girl pup began foaming around her mouth and wee'd at the same time. She looked very confused but it only lasted for about 15 seconds. After that we got really concerned and took her into the living room away from the other pups in fear of passing something onto them. We moved her food bowl and water there too. She seemed very hungry after that episode so she cleared her food bowl very quickly and began running around the room, being very energetic, she also drank water 3 times after eating her food. However, she managed to doze off and now she's been next to me ever since just sleeping. (Another possibility could be the fact that shes so tiny, she manages to climb under the kitchen work surface which I presume has a lot of dirt underneath and maybe little bugs like spiders etc.. which is impossible to get to as a human, so maybe shes eaten/licked something bad and had a bad reaction to that?) As I'm writing this its 4:50am and I've been monitoring her the whole night as shes been next to me. She seems to be doing fine, just mainly sleeping changing her position occasionally. Her mom is our dog, shes a very healthy Yorkie and is all up-to-date with her vaccinations and so is her dad. (Puree breed bloodline with many generations) They have had puppies before but we never had a problem like this before. All previous pups turned out to be very healthy and grew into very good healthy dogs. I have been awake all night doing countless hours of research and I have came to a conclusion that this episode was due to the vaccination or the worming tablet (as she was perfectly fine prior to the injections/worming tablet). As many people have suggested a similar thing happening to their puppy after the first injections/worming. I'm not going to lie to you, it was a horrific experience seeing our little girl going through that... I am wide awake right now waiting for the minute our local VET opens to take her there for a check up. However, I'm writing this to ask you guys if you personally or anyone you know had a similar experience? And how did the puppy turn out in the end? I really really really wish this does not become a constant thing as it would ruin our lil girls life and its just a horrible experience to go through again as owners.. I really hope this is not permanent thing and that you guys can share your similar experiences and hopefully give me some hope that ur pups turned out just fine in the end... I really appreciate you reading this, Please write your comment below and bump this post if possible, I will read all replies and will try reply to all the replies you guys send!! Hopefully this post may ease some future owner's worries (however we do not wish this to happen to anyone) Really hope our girl gets better very soon I will keep you guys updated... |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | So very sorry this wee one is going thru this! And you too! How scary . If you can, be sure to get the foaming and/or the "seizure" activity on video - it's soooo helpful for a Vet to be able to see what you're seeing/describing. When she gets vaccines again - I'd for sure use Benadryl about 30-45min prior, even though this may not be vax related.

| It sounds like you took the pups to a vaccine like clinic or event in my opinion I wouldn't do this especially when it's the first shot because before they get a shot they should have an exam to make sure they are healthy and some vaccine events a clinics don't always follow protocol with storeing of vaccines. I would definitely get her checked out asap. I would also keep her from getting into areas she could get stuff by using an exercise pen or something similar. You also may want to get the dose of Benadryl she can take to give next time but I'm thinking it was the dewarmer. I have seen issues with those before. What was in the shot? Was Lepto in it? I hope she will be ok.

| Hey guys, Thanks for the replies. She had another short episode this morning after sleeping tight all night. Took the lil one to the VET this morning, she seems fine, the vet examined her and couldn't find anything in particular. He did say that the worming tablet could have something to do with it. She back home now with her brothers, playing and having fun. She's eating and drinking fine. I'll try get a photo of her VET passport for you guys, but everything is OK so far. I'll update again once anything happens! |
