| Coughing I just lost one kid to collapsing trachea and have her younger sister coughing, gaging and acts like she has a hair ball. They've done x-rays and know that she has collapsing trachea. So far we have done nothing, cough pills, cough syrup, prednisone and antibiotics. Nothing is working. I've even bought holistic meds that seemed to help for a little while and have stopped. I read where Tennessee University is having success using a drug called Adequan which they use in severe arthritis cases. Does anyone know anything about this or any drug used to help this condition. I've had a couple vets tell me that surgery can be done but it doesn't have a high success rate and I cannot stand to see another one of my babies die such a horrible death. Please help if you can. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | If it were me and Adequan was a possibility - I'd absolutely pursue it !

| Cali has been on Hycodan now for three days. Boy does it make her feel good but not doing too much for her cough. So I think it's time to hit the vet and insist on trying the Adequan. |

| Please keep us updated. I don't know a lot about this, as I've only been a new Yorkie parent for a year, but, I hope the regimen you've proposed will be amazing. |

| I had her Hycodan refilled and will keep her on it for a couple of weeks to see how we do. I will not lose another to collapsing trachea. It is a very brutal and horrible death. They literally suffocate and there is nothing you can do. I know that surgery can be performed but is not a very successful solution. They say the best thing to do is to keep them calm (hard keeping a Yorkie calm) and to control the cough. I will keep updating as we go. |

| My baby has a collapsing trachea too & I'm terrified of her dying that way. Is your medication working? |

| Collapsing Trachea I currently have her on Hycodan or Tussigon which is the generic (boy does it make her feel good, almost like a puppy again) but only has helped her cough by about 50%. I am only giving it to her twice a day, it is a narcotic so at first she is a little loopy. Then I have cough tabs that my vet gave me. Some days I used them alternating and some days if she is going to go for a walk, I use the Hycodan 2-3 times that day. I lost one last month and it is a miserable death and very heartbreaking because I simply did not know how serious this was. I get my prescription from Walmart and it is a liquid so it's not so hard on her swallowing a pill. The prescription is $4 and it lasts about 2 weeks. You also really need to try to keep your baby calm. Mine only coughs when she gets excited. Everything I have read said that it really has more to do with controlling the behavior and the meds are secondary. |

Yorkie Yakker | Collapsed trachea I know how you feel. I just got the prescription got Tussigon today and I am worried sick. My little Izzie only coughs when she get up. It seems odd to me that she plays and runs during the day with no problem. But when she get up is when the coughing starts like she has a hair all. Does anyone have experience with the morning coughs? |
