Long stressful night with puking Frodo. Had our 7 month old Frodo neutered on Friday. Was doing fine until last night when he started throwing up every 10-15 minutes. This went on for a few hours before I finally took him to the emergency vet. All of his blood tests came back normal, and no sign of fever. They did give him cerenia and a subq fluid injection. Now it's just wait and see. They said if he throws up while on the Cerenia, then we need to have Xrays done. So far no throw up, 6 hours after injection. But he's very lethargic this morning. He did drink some water and kept that down, but no interest in food at all. Just smells it and turns his head away. Anyone gone through something like this? Still quite stress out as they didn't find a cause, so I don't know what might be wrong. Don't think he got into anything yucky to eat since we'd been keeping a close eye on him all weekend after his surgery.

Can't be sure that the vomiting is due to the surgery, but here is an article on vomiting post-surgery: https://www.cuteness.com/article/pos...-vomiting-dogs Some common causes are reaction to the anesthetic, and reaction to the pain killers given following the surgery. Or the vomiting might not have anything to do with the neutering. Monitor him closely, and if his situation doesn't improve, or if he doesn't regain his appetite by the end of the day, I'd definitely call the vet.

Taking him back to the vet this morning. He hasn't eaten anything since Sunday afternoon. Drinking a little bit of water here and there, but he did throw up a bit of foam this morning. He's peed a few times, but hasn't gone poop since Sunday afternoon. The cerenia shot had worn off, so gave him one of the pills they sent us home with. But all he wants to do is lay down in his bed. Sometimes has a hard time getting comfortable and doing that little Yorkie groan once in awhile.

I'm right there with you. The same weekend we had here. Jaya started throwing up after Apoquel. No food or water for a whole day. Emerg. Vet visit, shot, fluids, etc. I'm able to give her NutriCal on my finger, I don't know if you've tried it. It can work wonders to spark an appetite. She's coming around and I hope Frodo will too. My prayers for you and Frodo. Keep us posted.

Thanks for the tip on NutriCal. Hadn't heard of that. Will bring that up with the vet when we go in and pick some up after.

Just got back from vet. They did X-Rays and nothing major showed, but 2 small spots they need to watch. They are going to keep him for 24 hours, get his tummy well hydrated and then X-Ray again in the morning to see if those spots have moved or if anything else shows up. They are also going to give him some pain meds to make him more comfortable because he's obviously not currently. Ugh, this sucks. He's almost never alone without my wife or I, miss him already and very worried. Back to work I guess to hopefully keep my mind occupied.

He's still at the vet. He hadn't pooped yet, so they gave him an enema. Then they were going to try and feed him some gerbers chicken and rice to see if he'll keep that down. He said that a lot of times after surgery and anesthesia they can get constipated. He said X-rays this morning didn't show anything to be concerned about and everything else is looking good. If he poops and doesn't throw up after the feeding, then he said we could bring him home this afternoon. That way if he's not doing well still we could get him back in to the vet before they close. So, at this point we're just crossing our fingers and waiting.

| Little update. He's been eating the gerber food and keeping it down, but he wasn't interested in regular chicken. But he thinks if we get him home he'll be more interested in eating. So, we'll be picking him up in a couple hours (they have an IV catheter they have to remove still and get him ready for discharge. So hopefully he's on the mend and we can slowly get him to eat and back to our normal lovable pup. We did pick up some NutriCal and have some boiled chicken and rice ready as well. | I'm so glad he's getting to come home! When Monroe was sick (either pancreatitis of enteritis from two different specialists) she refused to eat anything, included plain chicken breast. I finally found the only thing she was willing to eat was Bison. Hopefully he'll be happy with the chicken & rice when he gets home, but if not the bison seems to be irresistible (and very expensive of course haha). Sending prayers for his continued recovery!!! |

| Poor Frodo to go through surgery and then become so sick! Good to hear that things have calmed down since and that he's eating again and is able keeping the food down. It's such a huge scare when our little ones get sick. I know that feeling of being so helpless - it's is incredibly awful! Our only experience with non-stop vomiting was when both of them ate something nasty (that I didn't notice) from the street. They vomited for a few days. Same symptoms from both of them. Luckily it wasn't some blockage and after the injections to prevent the vomiting they slowly got better. As for food, Scottie has always loved rice and chicken. Casie on the other hand smells rice and looks at me like I'm feeding her poop (ironically she LOVES poop). I've been told that cooking plain oatmeal is a good alternative to rice. Hope Frodo feels better really soon!!

Thanks for the well wishes everyone. Unfortunately he's back at the vet this morning. He came home yesterday, and immediately threw up. So we brought him back in for an injection of the Cerenia. Did ok overnight, drank a bit of water, but no food. And only wanted to lay down, other than going pee a couple times. This morning, no interest in food again, a bit of water, and threw up a bit again. So, he's back in and they are going to do another round of full blood work, x-rays and the barium test so they can really see if there is some sort of blockage that isn't showing up on an X-ray. He did seem much more attentive this morning, still not active, but at least a bit interested in things. But can still tell he's feeling really crummy.
