| Vestibular Syndrome? Baxter the last couple of days just wasn't "himself" - but I did not see anything that was overly alarming - but enough where I was watching him closely. Yesterday he didn't want to eat or drink and I began to fear he was starting his yearly pancreatitis episode which he seems to have - which we have dealt with and know what to watch for etc. This morning I woke up to a dog that looked completed "drugged". Head swaying, couldn't walk, falling over. After my having a near heart attack I did collect myself and got him to our vet right away - I didn't even call first. The vet said possible Vestibular Syndrome. I asked if this could be in anyway connected to having his rabies shot last Wednesday. She said she would call the company of the rabies shot and report the symptoms and see what they say. Anyway - Here I know sit at my kitchen table all alone and in tears. They kept my Baxter to run some tests and put him on an iv as he is was a bit hypoglycemic and dehydrated. I know he is missing me terribly and scared and probably ticked off at me for leaving him. - Baxter is 6 year old solid 10 pound bundle of love. Anyone have any advice or experiences on this? |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | I don't have experience with this. Just wanted to offer a hug and to let you know that you were heard. It is so very hard for all involved to have a sick family member(((((hugs)))))

| Praying for Baxter and you. The symptoms Baxter has can be the result of many things. Praying the test results bring good news and that the vet can get Baxter on the road to recovery.

| Got an update from the vet. They couldn't get an iv line in immediately so had to give him shots of fluid between his shoulder blades - but now were able to get an iv in. Blood tests: Glucose normal. Proten low. Kidney high. Sodium low. CBC shows anemic. Red blood cells low. White blood cells high. They gave him a shot of Dexamethasone. She is suspecting Addison Disease and will send off blood sample to get tested. I am glad he is there but I am so sorry for him. Just wanted to give you an update. |

| Thank you for updating us on your baby. I'm sorry you didn't receive better news, but I'm glad you and your vet are the track to finding out what is ailing Baxter. Praying the test will rule out Addison's. Keep us posted.

| He is home. A final diagnosis was liver shunt. I will be doing lots of research on this page and others to find out all what I need to learn. He is on medication 3x a day plus antibiotics and a restricted diet. I might start a new thread if I end up with a ton of questions - but read up first. THank you all. I got my baby home! He is still a bit shaky and head tics yet and a bit unstable at moments. The vet said he is in no pain so I want him happy! He hasn't let me out of his sight since we got home - very clingy and I am loving that! |

| Did they do imaging? Are they sure it is a shunt? If so, surgery is the best option. My Teddy Bear was diagnosed with a shunt as an adult and had surgery. He is fine now! Here is a link about when he was diagnosed: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...ver-shunt.html Here is a great link about MVD and liver shunts: https://vetmed.tennessee.edu/vmc2/Do...NAL-201304.pdf

| Vestibular is also called Old Dog's Disease. Roxie got it a time or two when she was 17, and it lasted a day or two and she was back to normal (for a 17 year old with enlarged heart) Really pitiful to see. If a dog really has vestibular syndrome the effects are like Vertigo in humans.
