| stomach very hard Hello All, I have 3 dogs, 2 yorkies and 1 maltese. I came to this forum about my maltese issue is because i can't find another maltese forum. Hope ya'll won't mind. My 10 years old maltese always had stomach problems. Maybe once a month, but it was not serious. Usually when that happens she just have no appetite, no energy, stomach growls and pass a lot gas for a few hours to a day, and her stomach always feels very hard when that happens, we all thought its acid reflux problems. But this time, things are little different. Her stomach feels very hard, like rock. (When her stomach feel very hard, we put her on her back and gently rub her belly a little bit, her back legs are very stiff) She doesn't want us to touch her She doesn't wanna move, wherever you put her, she will just sit there. She passes gas and burp couple times Drinks very little water didn't see her poo today, pee very little. Earlier in the morning, her back legs were weak, she falls when she walks, after she slept the whole afternoon, she can walk without falling now, and her stomach feels a tiny bit softer. She ate when we hand fed her chicken breast cooked with brown rice and chicken broth after she slept the whole afternoon. But still don't wanna move or use bathroom. Went straight back to sleep. I'm sorry if my descriptions are not very organized, i'm just trying to describe as detailed as possible. We are going to take her to vet tomorrow. But i wanna check if anyone here have similar experience to share. To be honest, I don't trust the vet completely. A little background about my maltese, she is about 4 lbs, she is very small but kind of round (fat). She had some issue when she was a puppy, she wouldn't eat and pass out a lot. The vet didn't find out what happened after we went to multiple different ones. A very nice yorkie breeder taught us to force feed her baby food for a while because she had low blood sugar. After a few months of baby food, she was playful and normal. any advices would be greatly appreciated. |

| I wouldn't try to guess on this one, but she definitely needs to be seen by a vet as soon as possible. If you don't trust your vet, find another one!! Welcome to YT...sorry I cannot help any more on this one.

| Hi, Sorry that your Maltese is in such distress Sounds not good. Would you let us know what you find out from the vet? I hope the vet will be able to help in spite of the distrust you have.

| we were at the local vet and referral specialist/er all day to day. did x-ray and ultrasound. can't find anything wrong with her. ended going home with pain medicine. the er doctor first said it was knee cap, later she said she asked another opinion, its not the knee cap. I feel she is just not experience enough. plan to go to another specialist in a few days if she doesn't get better with pain medicine. |

Definitely is not the knee....this is a stomach issue and I am not so sure I would give pain meds for that. Did they do any blood work? That would be in order if something in the tummy is suspected....to see if any alterations. Could be a protein losing condition and blood work would be the first sign.

| I hope you will take your baby to a specialist and not give her the pain medications first. They will not take care of this problem but will only mask the symptoms if they will even do any good. As was said this is not a knee problem and the vet does not know what she is doing if she thinks this. I hope and pray your little one will get the care she needs and soon! Best wishes to you and your little one. Please update us on this situation! Thanks.

| Thank you all for your replies. We actually took her to another ER the next day, and the neurologist there suggested IVDD (just like our family vet). We did MRI and a bunch other tests, later it confirmed it was IVDD at the lumbar area. We had operated surgery on her, that was successful. But since she had many other issues, I'm not sure if it's the complication from the IVDD surgery.... I started another thread about that issue. |
