| My Mickey has an enlarged liver and is dehydrated. Can anyone tell me if their dog had that and with meds does this correct or is this a life time thing now?

| I would say it depends on the cause. If age related then it would be life long if MVD or shunt then meds will need to be given life long as well. Depending on the cause sometimes short term meds may solve it. Prayers for your baby. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Is it just "fatty liver", or is it due to something else...? If fatty liver, this can be resolved w/ modifications...

| I don't think the vet knows why. He cautioned me about feeding him fatty food, which I don't do. I started him on Milk thistle so wondered about if that would handle it. Thanks for your input.

| I had a Shih Tzu with a liver shunt diagnosed at age 7 & chose a more natural route to treat her with Denamarin & she just passed a few months ago at age 15. It also contains milk thistle. Maybe you would like to ask your vet if this might be a good option for your furbaby.

| Mickey is doing well. He is eating and drinking just fine with just a little help from my syringe once or twice a day. Just thought I should update on him.

| In the absence of other symptoms, I don't know if I would be terribly concerned. BUT, why was he dehydrated when he went to the vet? Had he been sick? How was his blood work? Syringing liquids really doesn't do much for dehydration. Usually if they are eating and drinking they get enough. When ill and dehydrated, subcutaneous fluids or IVs are needed. Sounds like he is doing better..hope that continues.

| His blood work was elevated for Hemoglobin and other blood things. Sorry he didn't give me a copy. He doesn't drink much and never has so that's why I syringe it to him. I know about subcutaneous fluids. My baby Dudley had to have that done for a number of years. I would do that but he didn't think it was necessary, thank God. Not my favorite thing to do. The liver was seen on x-ray.

He probably had a high hematocrit which shows dehydration...but was he ill at the time?? Enlarged liver could be many different things.....you vet didn't think further tests were needed?

| No he wasn't ill until he just collapsed in front of my steps. I ran him to the vet immediately. Vet didn't say anything about more tests. Maybe need a new vet.

I might think about going to an internal med specialist. It is kind of odd for a pup to just suddenly be dehydrated and collapse like that.

I agree. I will share with you what one gp vet said to me, when I said I want a referral to a specialist, she said good for you, I can never understand why one would get a second opinion from another gp.
