| Possible Luxating Patella So another issue both Boomer and Thumper have is a grade 2 Luxating Patella. I do not know much about the grades but the vet did not seem too concerned and said lots of small dogs live a long life without it ever being an issue. I just need to monitor the jumping which, I admit is an issue. I had to take Thumper back to the Vet this morning because he either was having a reaction to his Rabies Shot (got one for 3 years) or his patella is bothering him. The Vet said to monitor it for the next few days to see. He didn't want to give him an inflammation shot if its just a local reaction to the rabies shot. This morning he kept licking his hind leg and when I tried to rub it he would yelp and try and bite me (something he has never done) Of course when I take him to the vet he doesn't do any of that. He is just being a lazy person today. no wagging tail and just laying down. I did take him on a short walk and he seemed to enjoy that. I think he may be improving a little as he doesnt seem to be licking the area and no more yelping. I just hate seeing him in any kind of discomfort. I want to be able to take it away. Can anyone let me know what to expect with a Luxating Patella and how bad is a grade two he said its on both knees that grade.

| If you search luxating patella here on this site you will learn lots from several people ...know that this condition does not go away or get better and one wrong move and you have big problems like a ligament tear plus kneecap surgery and a longer healing time.... Good luck

| There are better sources to explain the grades of LP, but the symptom that Gracie had when hers became an issue was that she would not walk on the bad leg. She never showed pain or discomfort when she was off of the leg, even when the vets palpated it. I would give the puppy a chance to "recover" from the shot before I got worried. With grades 1-4, and four being the most serious, it is worth giving it a little time.

Though I did video him when I pressed into his thigh on both sides he would yelp and pull away. This way I can show the vet. There are times he is fine and other times he is yelping. Maybe the shot exacerbated it. He is just not being himself i.e. tail wagging happy to see me. Doesn't want any belly rubs. And to top it all off my video camera I have set up to watch them at work broke so now I will be worrying like crazy. Ugh. I am gonna order another one ASAP. My dog walker will look out for any signs as I mentioned to her what happened. This site is just a great place to vent and also get amazing advice.

| It all depends on the age of the pup. If they are young it is usually best to do the surgery to reduce the wear and tear on the cruciate ligament. When they are older, the ortho surgeon I use does not recommend surgery unless the knee is really bothering them. The reason is that often you fix the knee and then a few months later they tear the ligament and you have another surgery to pay for and they have the recovery to go through again. Best thing always is to get the opinion of a board certified surgeon who specializes in orthopedics. You cannot go by the grade. There are variables...and only an experienced surgeon is really going to give you the right advice. The surgeon I use emphasizes all the time not to focus on the grade.

| Update on Thumper Thumper is about 5-6 years old so not a young pup. The vet really thinks its just a reaction to the rabies shot. I got the 3 year one. He is still not himself but he is eating and walking regularly. I have a followup call with the vet on Friday if things do not improve. I sent him a video of my concerns and he said it looks like the injection site. My concern is he is doing the same thing on his left side as well. Like I said I am not a patient person so the wait and see is killing me. I am hoping it is just a reaction to the shot and nothing more. I just wish I can take his discomfort away I don't think he is in pain just a lot of discomfort.

| Update Thanks all.... Thumper is finally back to his full loveable self. I call him my old man because he has such an old soul. I believe my vet was right and it was just his rabies shot. I don't think I will get the three year one anymore due to his reaction. He is a jumper and I am trying to put a stop to it and have him use the stairs but that is a work in progress. He will use them to get up to the bed but at times if he is in a rush he will just jump off the bed.
