Protein loss Condition I'm new to this forum, but I share in the love for my dog. I've had Bella since she was 6 wks old. She is 5 and recently became sick with fluid in abdomen and chest. Local vet considered possible heart condition, but heard no murmur. He sent us home with Antibiotics and Lasiks to use daily. She did ok for a few days and then we noticed labored breathing again. The vet has sent us to a specialist that is running test and I was phoned today about a possible issue with Bella where she loses protein. The Dr. said they could do exploratory surgery (which wont change the prognoses just give as a definitive diagnosis. I would gladly do this if this would be the cure, but that's not what the Dr. indicated. I told the Dr. we would like to treat symptomatically and see how she responds. He said she would have to be on a high protein diet and I think steroids and monitor her progress once released from the hospital. Can anyone please help me that has gone through this? I'm a responsible pet owner, but I don't have thousands of dollars for exploratory surgery that wont cure my baby girl. Bella is my family and I want her to be happy and have a good life. I love her so very, very much. Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated. Thank You

I just lost my 5 year old baby girl a couple of months ago from PLE. She was treated at Purdue University Hospital. Was in ICU for 3 days, and lots and lots of medicine. My understanding is their body doesn't process the protein. It was all a nightmare for me that ended with us losing her. There was no surgery options, but they did do a biopsy. PLE can have more than one cause and cancer was one of them so they had to rule it out. Hers was caused from IBD (irritable bowel disease). I have questioned myself over and over if I missed something, but the truth is she had had diarrhea a few times that always resolved. The last time it just didn't get better, and then she started having the fluid in the belly. Mine WOULD NOT eat the special food. We hand fed her just to get a few bites in her. I did everything I could do to get her well, but she just didn't. Good luck, some of them eat the restricted diet and live well. If I can answer any question, let me know.

Thank you so much for your kind words. Bella was released from hospital last night. Her protein levels had improved to almost normal, which was encouraging to me. I'm a little overwhelmed with all this medication and the new food (which I only hope she will eat). She is on antibiotics 2x daily, Lasix 2x, prednisone 2x, and a nausea pill. This doesn't even include the weekly injections which will start next week and hopefully after I can give her injections at home. No mam, there is no cure or surgery. We are just going to pray that she will respond to the medication and diet change. Thank you again.

| Protein loss Hi, I was wondering if it might help for your little one to be on a prescription diet by Royal Canin called Hydrolyzed Protein? My Joey has been eating the dry and the wet for quite awhile and it has helped him. If you google it and read the reviews it has helped many dogs with protein loss problems as well as allergy problems. I can,t remember his exact problem but he was having non stop diarrhea and was on a different diet for it that did not help. He had tests run and was told he was not absorbing the nutrients from his food so he was put on the hydrolyzed protein diet and he has no more diarrhea. He also has to take lasix for fluid in his abdomen every third day now and it has helped. He also takes a daily multivitamin, a Complete probiotic and a denamarin for his liver. He is doing well on all of this. But my main reason for writing was to suggest the possibility of that prescription diet to you. as a possible solution for the protein loss. Best wishes to you. Hope all goes better for you two.

Update on Bella's diet So far Bella has transitioned to the I/d Hills low fat pretty well. I didn't think she was going to like it, but she has started to come around. The treats was a concern for me, because I always gave her a marrow treat when she would go outside. The doctor said I could give her a tiny bite of the greenie pill pockets I'm using to give her medicine in. I just hope when we go back Friday her albumin levels are holding and she is showing signs of responding to the treatments. She still doesn't completely act like my little Bella, but I do see some improvement. She doesn't seem to be struggling to breathe like before we went to the Animal Hospital. Thank you all for checking on my little one. Gina
