| freaking out... inguinal hernia hi guys. so i'm supposed to get my new puppy soon, half sister to my current baby ekko. she's about 8 weeks old now. today my breeder told me that she think the baby girl may have inguinal hernia.. she's going to take her to the vet tomorrow to get her checked out. my bf had that exact hernia in his groin and he had to get surgery this year and it was really hard on him.. i couldnt imagine how it'd be like on that little girl :/ breeder said that she'd pay for the surgery expense and all if she needs it in the future.. i guess that's a good thing.. and that she'd take care of her while she's healing and such.. but i donno what i should do. i do read that some puppies' hernia do end up closing during 10-12 weeks, but i also do read that some puppy indeed need surgeries and in some cases, their hernia is so bad that it can be fatal.. what should i do...? should i just wait for next litter or just hope that it'd heal? |

| Not an expert at all, but my morkie's mom chewed off the cord too close and I was told that's what caused my puppy's hernia... It was noted by the vet that gave her the first set of shots/etc, but not larger/serious enough to cause immediate concern... I'm taking her to the vet for her second set of shots on Monday and will find out how it is now and what may be required... The first vet said that his approach would be to stitch/close it when she was being spayed to have it done but without any unnecessary extra surgery... He said it might add $50 to the cost of the spay but nothing financially overwhelming... I'm eager to see how it's changed and what the vet says on Monday so I know how you feel... Hope someone here can offer more advice/info... |

I have a real hard time with SOME breeders saying they will be there to make it right if it goes south on you....even if you get it in writing, if she moves, or disappears, or heaven forbid, dies, you are twisting in the wind by yourself. I would ask her if she will give you money off on the purchase price....half price would be appropriate...find out what that surgery runs and get that much deducted from what you are paying for the pup. That wont help alleviate the inherent dangers or risks associated with ANY surgery....have her do the surgery before you pick the pup up.....I bought a baby with an inguinal hernia many years ago...that breeder told me all about it, checked with my vet to be sure he knew what he was doing, then she deducted the cost of the surgery and price for post op care from the price of the puppy. My baby had the surgery, did absolutely fine, and lived 16 years. | |

| Our lily had the same and our breeder told us about it gave us the option to pick another pup or she could have the surgery done at 12 weeks and keep her for recovery ( her vet is a specialist ) We also had her spay at the same time. She did very well and continues to she is about 6 months now. |

I would not rely on a promise to pay for medical care in the future.

| thank you all for your response.. and @noomi, i hope your baby will have a successful surgery. i know i was in nervous wreck when my other baby had to go through lp surgeries on both knees :/ didn't even know dogs could get hernia that way, after birth and all. O_o; so.. i've spoke to breeder today and the vet indeed pointed out that the baby have inguinal hernia. :/ and she recommends surgery at 3 months, as it was pretty bad.. but she was too tiny at the moment. i know i'm attached to the girl already, as she looks imaginably cute and extremely friendly, but i don't think i can keep her anymore.... so i'm changing to next litters. i feel really bad making this decision (even though i didn't pick her up yet..), but nami, who had lp, i'm still scared whenever she plays.. walks.. runs or anything that may stress her tiny little legs out.. and i'm sure i'd do the same worrying for the other girl. @mybellababy, did you find out that your baby had the hernia after you've picked her up? O_o? but i'm glad her surgery went ok. @yorkiemom1, @maximo, i know what you mean. the other breeder who i got the other girl from before (who had lp on knees) said that she'd pay some for it, but never responded ever since. i'd do something about it.. but she's out of country so it'd be hard to reach her. -_-; but this breeder, i've gotten other dogs from, and the girl with the hernia would have been the 3rd from her. it's not that i didn't trust her, as she offered to pay for the surgery while she's still there, and to keep her, but i'm not sure if i wanted to fear that the hernia would come back rest of her life. i feel so horrible feeling like i'm abandoning her already.. i hope you guys don't judge me :/ Last edited by Deviruchi; 05-13-2016 at 05:04 PM. |

| My breeder contacted me two weeks prior to me getting my new little love muffin and let me know that he has an umbilical cord hernia.. took him to the vet for his 4-month checkup and shots today and they said it's not a major concern we just get it taken care of when he gets neutered at 6 months she also paid me in advance for his surgery.
