| Urine sample - help please Hi all Bella had a urinary tract infection and was given antibiotics and she is doing Ok now however in two weeks she has to go back to the vet and they want A urine sample to check that everything is clear. I was told that in order to do that they will poke her bladder with a niddle and that scares me! Any idea how I can bring them a sample naturally? I am trying to think of ways to collect her pee when she goes out to the back yard. Any advice will be appreciated! Thanks? |

| Who told you about poking the bladder with a needle? My vet uses an electrical device that causes the urine to release. Not that much either but no needle. My current vet suggested I use a clean jar lid and when she squats slip it under her rear. This worked when she was a pup. If a boy, then I have no idea how to get a sample. Good luck.

| They don't have to use a needle, they can just express her bladder manually. |

| I've had some success in sliding a plastic plate under her - a little bigger target than a lid. Timing is the tricky part. |

| I'm concerned about some misinformation here. When a vet takes a urine sample using a needle, the procedure is called a cystocentesis. It is the most sterile way to collect urine, and the most comfortable way for females (over a catheter). I personally insist that each sample be taken by a cystocentesis unless I am catching the urine. Anytime I have a suspicion of a urinary tract infection, I want a very sterile sample so that the urine can be sent to the lab for a culture and if there is infection they can provide the correct antibiotic. Cystocentesis is safe and is a standard of care provided whenever a sterile sample is needed. For free catch, I have it down to perfection. I use a small ladle, the kind that you use for a gravy boat. They don't see me coming with it and I don't miss a drop. I place it in urine cups for transport to the vet. I only collect urine this way for one test that one of my dogs needs which specifically doesn't need to be sterile. For us, it's a bladder poke. I might add that a catheter done on my male dog a few years ago actually caused an infection in his bladder which resulted in expensive vet bills. So it's a cysto for us every time.

I actually did it just now for the first time and it went smoothly! Straight to a cup that I disinfected. I called the Vet and they didn't like the idea of that but I Am still not interested in a Cystocentesis. | |

| Update So today Bella had x-rays and U/S and they found bladder Stones. The vet suggested diet change and if it doesn't help then surgery. Has someone went through this and was able to treat bladder stones without Surgery? Thanks! |

I have had many cystos done on my pups...matter of fact Rookie had one today and a culture sent out due to some issues he is having. It is a very safe procedure and definitely the way to get a sterile sample.
