| Chewie is sick, and I'm sick with worry. I had to take her to the Emergency vet, because she was drooling from the nose- later found out that itw as indeed from her throat- she was huffing and breathing hard, whining, and had her tail curled under her butt, which was also (her bum) curled down. My daughter claimed she screamed while on the phone with our vet, so he insisted she go immediately. She showed me that my daughter was correct 20 minutes into the ER visit. She wouldn't move. won't eat, wouldn't drink anything other than the carrot juice I coaxed her with. WON'T EAT AT ALL STILL. Had the runs for two days in a row, during two BM's not the other ones. Only the ones where she had that Merriks food. She's been refusing foods for days, and would ONLY eaqt what we were eating, which we were firm with. Okay, fine. Stand firm. Ground turkey or not, we can't have her running our house. She FINALLY ate kibble. I took her to the groomer for a little lady part and bum with top knot visit, and she came back looking like she does. vet stated that she has an inflamed intestine, most likely due to stress, the medication flagyl, and having to switch up foods. She didn't say it was gastritis, and since I don't have the paperwork, I don't know what it was. Just started with an E. We are to rule out pancreatitis (which I grilled the woman on until she insisted my puppy was too young) or a blockage (even much less likely than the pancreatitis, according to her) and we are going to the vet in the next 24 hours to rule that out. My puppy is on METHADONE. She had uncurled very briefly for the vet, but 10 minutes later had another bout, and we gave and asked for the injection. We were told to give her tramadol but it was in a pill form. I can't do that to her right now. when I tried to feed her when she got home (I got puppy "Ice cream" down her and a few ounces of carrot juice) she whined and whined and ran. So, I put her on hubby's chest. She's stretched out under my shirt and comfortable. I have had very painful gas in my time. I am not healthy, and have Crohns and Multiple Sclerosis. I know gas can be extremely painful. I'm scared for my puppy, I really, REALLY am. I feel terrible, and really want to understand how this happened. My puppies dr explained Merriks is suuuper rich and very wet. I know rich foods can cause pancreatitis. I hope to god my wanting her to eat wasn't the cause of this. Vet is certain the groomer visit pushed her over the edge. My husband was there the whole time, but it doesn't make this better. My best friend's brother- someone I adored just for the fact he was amazing, died suddenly from pancreatitis, and he was a healthy man. This doesn't help my mental state right now. Without a blood test, they can't rule this out. They assured me WE are different and often get septic. Does any one have experience with this? She's comfortable, right now, and was able to look around at walmart, until a well meaning woman came up. she then scooted back down and snuggled. |

| update: She drank four capfuls of carrot juice, a lick of banana, and 1/2 teaspoon of canned pumpkin. she tried to steal my chicken nugget. she got a no. Stood by the door whining and whining by herself until I picked her up. Once she drank the carrot juice, she, (sorry to be uncouth) let out a giant toot. Methadone has passed through already, and she's on my bed next to hubby stretched out on my childhood blankie, her snuggler (pillow pet) and towel happy as a bug in a rug. Hubby gave in.. he's just as worried. Wanted to let you know she got some food down, and all of it for upset tummies. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Oh my gosh, Jen, I'm SO sorry to be reading this! I feel so bad for precious little Chewie and for your family going through this. I wonder what the heck is going on here and why such severe pain. If her intestines are indeed "inflamed", that can be extremely painful. I hope it's only that, and that it will quickly resolve. It's so scary when they're sick.

| Did you know that carrots produce lots of gas! I didn't until I ate like 3 raw carrots (small ones) as snack while watching TV. Later had such stomach pain nearly made me cry. But I googled it and found out 'carrots produce gas'. First and last time I do that! Just saying since you give her carrot juice. Praying for quick recovery. | Poor Chewie! Dogs are never too young to have pancreatitis, so I would have the test done. I agree with Nani, hold the carrot juice. Carrots did not agree with Max when he was a pup, even the tiniest bits. Lots of natural sugar in carrots too. If this is store bought juice, I would also check the ingredients to make sure it doesn't have added salt or something else. Both of my boys have had an incident of extremely painful gas, but it resolved in less than half a day. Plain pumpkin worked for Max, and a trip to the ER and walking around took care of Teddy (although they were still wiped out the next day). We didn't even have a chance to see the doctors who were in surgery. If Chewie does have pancreatitis, pumpkin and bananas probably are not advisable. Each dog is different, so I'm not sure what the best diet would be. For my guys, whenever they have digestive problems, steamed chicken breast and white rice are what I give them. Praying for Chewie.

| Hello, I'm sorry to hear about your little Chewie. I had a Yorkie who had pancreatitis when she was 5. She was in a lot of pain for a long time. My vet wasn't sure what was wrong with her at first, he advised me to put her on a diet of boiled or steamed chicken and white rice with a light sprinkling of charcoal on it and immediately she started to pick up, it was like a miracle. She had spent many days in her bed not moving, we though she was going to die, it was horrible. Slowly she returned back to normal but I remained giving her a small meal of chicken and food which was low in fat. She lived to until the age of 14. |

| Thank you. This is heartbreaking to watch. She's behind me now, on my chair, laid out on a heating pad on low. It's helping her. Tramadol is a major problem. The likelihood of her getting some today is slim, and she's in pain- again. I'm THIS close to calling back the urgent care and asking for pill form. The official dx is Enteritis. I THINK that's it, and I don't have the paper in front of me. It's inflamed intestine. I don't think it is, but my husband tells me I'm wrong, that's exactly what it is. No. I think it's colitis or pancreatitis. I'm leaning more towards colitis. She did the "prayer position" while eating and it scared the CRAP out of me. She hasn't done it before or since. She does that play bow a lot so unless she does it again, I'll think okay, she's a puppy and loves playing. What's wrong with her is that she's hungry. I'm only allowed to give her 1/16th of a cup of white rice and boiled ground turkey. I know with MY stomach issues if I get too hungry, my acid gets riled up, I get stomach aches, and then can have trapped gas, and then I'm NOT hungry. She woke up with an audible growling in her stomach- and it wasn't gas. She was whining for more food. She looked at me with those sweet eyes and I had to say I'm sorry baby girl, I can't. I snuck her a little to lick off my fingers, but that was it. I'm due to give her a half teaspoon in a few minutes, and then nothing else until 6pm. Thank you for the advice and prayers. Carrot juice and bananas are a no-go from here on out. Thank you, truly. |

| If she was not tested for pancreatitis, she needs to be....NOW not later. Pancreatitis can kill quickly if left untreated. I also would not be giving puppy ice cream or carrot juice. I had two pups get sick on that ice cream..never gave it again. Dog food is best imo ... something low fat .. maybe Hill's ID If not that, then chicken and rice. Hope things turn around soon.

| The icecream- just letting you gals know- was before this happened. Thankfully she didn't eat it. She bit my daughter today. On the nose, when she went to listen to her belly. Thankfully she didn't bit her HARD, but did it enough to leave al ittle mark. That was it for me. She went to the vet got an x-ray and a pancreatitis test, also fluids. I haven't heard back on the pancreatitis, they'll call me. I saw the xray. There WAS A tiny object in her intestine, she showed me to assure me it would pass through. However, her poop was severely backed up. And I'm talking, badly. It isn't hard- it's soft. They said yes, that pumpkin you were asking about? Give it to her. The groomer when she took our puppy back for five minutes I'm completely certain she messed with her adrenal glands. Now when Chewie has to go potty, she tucks her tail under her butt. She's whining. A LOT. upset about the fluids. Her temp could not be taken- wouldn't allow her any where near the butt, and when they finally got it, she struggled. it was at 95 when pulled out and almost done, plus she doesn't act feverish or feel feverish. She whined the second she got out of the office. She's walking and not whining, but any time she might go, she won't. That I do NOT like. So, her intestines are clear from any object. Her stomach? Maybe. they give it a very tiny chance. They can't tell really due to all the back up. She's still in pain. tolerated her walk, though, and seemed to really enjoy it. *as of this post, I got a call back. It DID come back slightly abnormal. They explained what that meant was that it could be a false positive from how extremely inflamed and backed up she is. It could indeed be a slight case and we caught it early. Nothing by mouth, but that was after I gave her the teaspoon of pumpkin. Nothing by mouth for 12 hours. Fluid therapy every day; especially if no BM, and a fat free diet for the next week. She is unhappy she can't see me. I have to go back down. I wanted my daughter to sit on the couch and watch her, but, she doesn't want any one but myself and to a lesser degree Dan. She WAS sleeping but I woke her up to put her in the crate like the vet said. However, I'm not locking her in it, so she hopped right out. Thanks again every body. |

| The only thing "funny" about this is when I THOUGHT she pooped a little while ago. I regularly check behind my couch and my daughter's chaise lounger. I missed last night. I saw her go in that area and saw it, so I said GOOD GIRL!!! GOOOOOOD girl!!! She was cocking her head to the side and was looking at me like You're a NUT JOB mommy! Yeah, it was from last night, probably right before we went to the ER. I'm grossed out I missed it. neeever miss these. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Oh gosh, poor little Chewie. Was so hoping for a better update, darn. BUT, you will get her better...just know that. I don't do groomers at all, but if I did - I would most definitely tell them to never, ever interfere w/ their anal glands. Anal glands should always just be left alone unless there is a diagnosed problem with them. Otherwise, manual emptying can not only damage stuff but can interfere w/ the natural emptying process, which is not good. But don't beat yourself up over her being sick - it just happens and there is really no predicting it some times.

Thank you, I appreciate the good thoughts and encouragement. I gave this woman a hand written note on what to do. top knot and clean up the gunk around her eyes. When Dan told me what happened I was upset, but, it taught me more. It doesn't help Chewie, but it helps me learn. She had two bms at 5am. Right as I type this she's having the zoomies, squealing at my daughter and whining at the same time. Ears laid back in excitement, and her tail for the first time in three days is upwards and doing the helicopter movement. I hope this trend continues. I don't know how I'm going to keep her from doing this, as she's supposed to be calm and quiet. I gotta go intervene. | |
