| Giardia! What an adventure! I bought my 8 month old Monty on Kijiji from a lady who had him for 48 hours. She did a pet store impulse buy and was going to take him back to the pet store ... nope! He has been with that pet store for 5 months of his 8 month life and those wee behaviour problems will just get worked out with me. Smile. Little sweetie. I picked him up on Sunday Jan 31 and on Tuesday I took him to the vet to set up an appt to get him neutered. We went over all the paperwork I got from the lady I bought him from ... the paperwork she got from the pet store. Found out he was born at a breeders in Arizona end of May 2015 and was bought by a pet store in Burnaby BC August 2015. He has basically bounced in and out of that pet store since then. Awww.... nod nod. I was asking if he had had all his shots on time, worm and flea etc etc when I noticed the 2 meds he had prior to leaving the states. The vet said they are common meds for giardia and another one I can't remember. I had asked how do we know they are gone and he said only through a poop test. Hmmm.... Then I found out that it can be transmitted to humans. ***RED LIGHT*** My daughter has just been put on the transplant list for a double lung transplant and I have been spending a lot of time with her and her chocolate lab!! She can not be exposed to anything that would compromise her further than she is. So that day I hung out with wee Monty until he had a nice healthy poo and we scooped and submitted for testing. He is completely healthy! No diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy etc etc. Apparently he is asymptomatic, a carrier if you will. Needless to say I have learned a WHOLE lot about giardia, never heard of it before and it is so so so common!! I got the call that Monty does indeed have the wee beasties feasting away inside of him so began his treatment on Saturday. Have been disinfecting my apt. And washing his little backside after each bowel movement to ensure he doesn't re-infect. Whew!! Then to my horror - I realized that I have been giving him one of the meds, the panacur, 2x daily instead of 1x daily! Good gods! Thankfully I only did it for 2 days but oh my word ... 2 days! I scoured the internet and finally found a number for an emergency vet hospital and called it in. She reassured me. Going to my vet first thing in the morning. I have had him for just over a week now and we have bee going out for long walks daily. Tonight he is bagged. Sleeping so soundly. Since about 7. Not used to him being so crashed. Worried. He is eating fine, drinking fine, peeing fine, pooing fine, no soreness in his body, walking steady ... just tired. And I am trying not to freak out ... sigh. Never had a small dog before. Brand new territory. Feel like a brand new Mom! Well I suppose I am! Glad I found this site... |

| Hi welcome to Yorkietalk! It seems Monty didn't have a good start, poor little guy. It's good that he's in a caring home now. I'm sorry you two are going through all of this. I'm sure it's stressful with your daughter and everything. Hopefully Monty is cleared from giardia soon. We would love to see pictures of Monty sometime.

| All is well in The Majestic Mr Monty's World!! I talked to the vet and Panacur is not a strong antibiotic so Mr Monty is just fine. He has his final dose tomorrow and then we send a poop sample in on Saturday. So by next Wednesday ... hopefully he will be able to rejoin this 4 legged friend population! Seems so weird to be "keeping him home" when the weather has been fantastic here in Vancouver and I just want to be out with all my other peeps and their dogs. Now that I have a dog... lol. He does NOT like the medicine at all not even one little bit. I basically have to cinch him in a towel and hold him like a football and his wee head under his chin while my boyfriend poses waiting for Monty to growl and yip so he can get the syringe in and give a lil squirt. The medicine tastes awful. Monty doesn't like anyone going near his mouth to begin with. He isn't very food motivated but I did find some freeze dried liver treats that he loves. So after the final squirt, I cuddle him in super close for a second and while he is still all wrapped up Tom gives him a treat. Then he bounces out of the towel and we love him up proper. Smile. |

| Round 2 - Still positive for Giardia Just got back from the vets. Monty still tests positive for giardia!! Grrrr.... Sigh. So my dr is putting him on a pancur 7 day on/7 off/7 on/7 off/7 on regiment. Seems excessive but after spending hours researching and reading online, not out of the ordinary and in fact is actually the norm to have to do 3 batches. So after experiencing extreme frustration trying to find information on types of disinfectants to use I have gone and purchased a Shark steam cleaner for my floors with an attachment I can use for the tricky places. Shrug. Some say it's overkill but I say whatever ... makes me feel better that I am attempting something. I am also going to be making slip covers for his beds because constantly washing them is going to break them down and it's easier to wash a slip cover than a bed lol. And a big bag of Value Village towels!! This way I can be swapping out towels in the front seat of the car, on the chair etc instead of having to clean the actual seats. Le sigh. I think the most disappointing thing besides Monty having the horrid wee beasties inside of him is the delay in his socializing and training. I have had to cancel yet another neuter appt so will continue to work with the inside marking. I have also had to cancel his obedience training. I am sooooo disappointed!! I have a very good telephone relationship with the trainer and can't wait to meet her and get going on training him her style but now that is going to have to be put off for at least a month. And it means I am going to miss out on her April class which means it won't happen until the winter as I will be traveling this fall. Big sigh. So as sad as I am feeling right now, I am very grateful he is not sick. It could be so much worse. Smile. He is worth it. Nod nod. I get to Youtube my training lessons and wing it. |
