Cassie cannot eat-Help! Hello all, So sorry I haven't been here in such a longtime.Taking care of my dad who has alzheimers, takes so much time. But I am very worried about Cassie. She seems unable to eat. I'm not sure why or what is happening. Just to be clear, of course I am taking her to the ER for blood tests or other tests if needed. I never fool around with Cassie, she always goes to the Vet when there is even the hint of a problem, so no need to worry. What I am looking for is if someone has any idea what might be the problem, or has seen this before. I can tell you several things. Firstly she had a UTI about two weeks ago, but two weeks on abx and a new test shows this is cleared up. And also, she was eating while she had the Uti She gets her teeth cleaned either every month when we can or every other month, so I don't think it is her teeth. Also, it does seem as if she is very hungry and wants to eat. When I am holding her in my arms to feed her she leans forward with her little mouth open and licks the food off my finger eagerly. But after a couple of licks she kind of jumps backward in my arms and turns her head away, signaling she can't or won't take any more. I have tried every king of food under the sun, and she responds well at first, but then seems to have to stop eating. It's almost as if it is a startle response. She seems to have an appetite and even barks for food, but then does not seem to be able to eat past a couple of licks. I am very very worried. This has been going on for awhile now... Thank god she hasn't lost any weight, because I try to feed her all day long every hour or so, so she must be getting enough in her, but this can't go on. It's been the better part of a week, and I keep thinking she's going to be able to eat but then can't. So we are off to the ER. But I am desperate to understand this. Can someone please help. Has anyone ever had a hungry pup who seems to have an appetite but just can't eat. What is happening here? Please Please help. TIA S

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hmmmm...gosh, I just don't know...??? All I can think of is either there is a tooth issue, or, she is nauseous but hungry at the same time. Does she ever throw up bile or anything?

Cassie So sorry Cassie is off her food. It sounds like she is nauseous as Ann suggests. If she has been to the vet for tests and nothing has been diagnosed it is a mystery. Perhaps she had a GI bug that was cleared up by the antibiotics for the UTI. Could be that now her gut flora are out of whack and she is feeling sick. Could probiotics help? Or Cerenia for the nausea? The more I read here, the more I see GERD symptoms, could she have that? I do feel for you and your baby and hope you are able to find the cause of her discomfort and get her well. If none of our suggestions help, I guess she will need another work up at the vet. But hopefully she will get over this as quickly as it came on, and you will not know the reason?

Hi guys, Thanks for getting back to me. Today is ER day if she does not start eating [breakfast.] Still too early to try. As you can see I'm not sleeping very well. So worried. She is actually barking to be held-not a Cassie thing at all- to be held all the time now-not a good sign. I think I dreamed she was bleeding from somewhere, but it's not true, it was just a dream. No Ann she has never gagged or attempted to throw up anything. But she does clench her teeth and sometimes grinds her little teeth which makes me even more suspicious that she is in pain. Probiotics sounds like a great idea dottiesyrky. Never thought of Gerd, actually I have Gerd myself. Hmmm. If we have to go to the ER I will mention this. It seems as if she has a lump in her throat, or as if something physical is blocking her from being able to swallow or as if swallowing is hard for her or painful. That is the only way I can think of to describe what seems to be happening. Poor baby. She kind of jumps back as if a startle response while I hold her in my arms. It must be awful to be hungry and not be able to eat. Thanks so much for your input. Will check back soon. Last edited by broodizt; 11-17-2015 at 07:29 AM.

I don't have any suggestions but I just wanted to say that I am thinking of you and Cassie today. I hope the vet can find out why she isn't able to eat and it is simple to fix.

So something very weird just happened. I developed a painful thingy on my tongue. Kind of like a painful little sore, kind of like a herpe? It's on the side of my tongue, and it is very painful to eat. My body is always in sympathy with Cassie and we often communicate wordlessly or psychically if you will. I wonder if this is my body trying to tell me what is wrong with Cassie. Does this sound nuts? :-) No but I really do have physical symptoms in response to her, we are so connected, it is on every level. I know this sounds very weird to some, but I have stopped trying to question it and just accepted it. Anyway, I wonder if she has a sore in her mouth. I wonder if that could be it. I'm wracking my brains. Will try to feed her soon. Will keep in touch

Cassie Her symptoms sure are strange. Perhaps she has some kind of mouth lesion or pain that makes her scared to eat. Or even a throat infection? I understand how you are so in tune with Cassie and her feelings. We do get so close to them and this can happen. I think it is interesting that when on UTI meds she ate ok. Like this now is some aftermath of the UTI treatment? Poor baby, I hope your or the vet finds the reason soon. You must be very concerned about her. Hoping for good news soon.

Well tried to feed this morning. Made bacon and drained very much and only gave the meat part cause she loves this and I give only give tiny amount maybe twice a year. Just wanted to see if she would eat it. She went for it but was soon turning are head away again after I mixed just a few leftover pcs into her berbers baby food. Ate some, but still kinda the same behavior. We are going to ER today. Will keep all posted once we are back

Bacon She must feel sick poor baby if she won't take bacon! She really is not hungry it seems. Dogs tend to eat via smell and I think if it were some physical obstruction or lesion, she might tend to eat and then spit out when it got to the painful area? But the lesion etc cannot be ruled out of course. I guess the ER will do all the normal tests, but it may be worth considering anti nausea meds to start? I do so feel for you and your baby, if only she could talk and tell you what ails her. Good luck at the vet and hope the update is positive. Hugs.

Hi all, We just got back from the ER. The Vet checked her out and said she didn't see anything alarming and attempted to feed her AD dog food, which I'm shocked, she gobbled up a whole eighth of a can in about one minute says the Vet. I'm relieved ands puzzled. Not sure what was wrong. Doc said she didn't think she needed blood tests just yet. She gave me three cans of the AD and told me to feed her an eighth of a can two to three times a day. We will see how that goes. She did say there was some dried on food in the corner of her whiskers that might have been pulling her hair as she tried to eat. The Vet cleaned her up and she ate dinner tonight. So hoping and praying it will continue. Thanks for all your prayers and kind words. Hope there is nothing else to worry about. So far she seems okay. Only time will tell.

Cassie Thanks so much for the update. Wow, you must be so relieved that she is eating well now and that the vet did not find anything wrong with her. that would be something if it was just her hair pulling and stopping her eating! Another hazard we Yorkie moms have to look out for. Praying she sleeps well tonight and continues to eat well from now on.
