Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and welcome to YT . So sorry to hear your baby is ill. What do you mean, exactly, by liver compromised - is there a shunt? Didn't your vet go over food limitations and meds etc with you or...? We have lots of dogs here w/ liver issues, so some folks will hopefully chime in w/ advice for you.

| Hi and welcome to YT. I am sorry to hear that your baby is ill. I did a quick search to help you find different threads here on YT dealing with Liver issues. I would definitely get a 2nd opinion and more advice from your Vet and see if the issue can be managed just by diet or if you need to see a specialist and deal with it surgically. You might want to look into pet insurance. It may not be covered since you discovered it before getting the insurance but in the long run it is a wise move to have insurance. I got it when I first brought home Buster and he had some health issues and it paid itself off for the next ten years as Buster needed knee surgery and they paid 80% of the bill! Good luck with your baby sending prayers and best wishes. LIVER SHUNT - Google Search

| Hi Robin and welcome to YT. I have a pup who had a liver shunt which required surgery. I can tell you that we are using Science Diet LD formula because it has less protein than most other foods. You might also like to be sure to cut as much protein out of the diet as you can by treating and feeding with fruits and veggies and oat based cereals like Cheerios. If I can be of any help, feel free to message me.

| Hi Sorry I was not on for a few days. I got Pet Plan as I liked that they also covered alternative methods of treatment.

| As stated in other posts, I give all my dogs Milk Thistle prophylactically, to help keep livers in tip top shape....I order mine from Canada....been giving it to them for years, just to help detox livers....they are subjected to so many chemicals and stuff in the grass, the air, dog food, water, etc.....I would definitely be giving it if any of mine had liver issues at all.....then as Buster Brown stated, "......I would definitely get a 2nd opinion and more advice from your Vet and see if the issue can be managed just by diet or if you need to see a specialist and deal with it surgically....." |
