| Preparation H gel on a puppy? (This is a 2 part question) I am so upset. I just spoke to an ole friend that I haven’t spoken to in a couple of months. She is a NY gal from Brooklyn. She told me last month she bought a 8 week old Shih Tzu / Bichon mix. The puppy is now 3 months old, she tells me when the puppy goes to poop he squats, yelps makes a little bit then yelps, runs in circles squats yelps again then finishes his poop. Then starts biting at his butt. She brings the puppy to a vet with stool sample, was told no worms, is told his anal glands were swollen and protruding, the vet pushes anal glands in and uses a gel pain reliever, this vet tells her to use Preparation H gel to reduce the swelling, (insert in rectum) 2 times a day, vet does not tell her how much to use. She says the puppy does not do this all the timemaybe 3 or 4 times a week. She did the Prep. H for 2 or 3 days, said she saw no change she stopped using the Prep. H the puppy’s stool was softer than normal and because it is used for humans she was worried it would cause more harmthan good. Now she wants to take puppy to a 2nd vet because this has been going on a few days after getting him I advised her to stop wasting time & money and go to the ASPCA in Manhattan were they have specialist in every field. She is on disability, does not have a lot of money, has already spent more than she should have on vet visits, pup hadhis first vac. shot. She said she is taking puppy to a 2nd vet because she can’t afford the cost of a specialist, she is seriously thinking of giving up the puppy because of the expense. I am sick over this. I couldn’t ask what she was thinking to do, I didn’t want to hear her answer. I am reaching out to YT on her behalf she does not have a computer. Has anyone had this kind of experience with their dog, has anyone ever used Prep. H on a dog. As far as contacting the “breeder” I asked her where she got this puppy from, she says Craigslist” man lives in The Bronx,(she does not own a car) he did not want her to come to get the puppy, he drove to Bklyn to deliver the dog to her. I asked her if this man does not want to give you his address and will drive alllll the way to Bklyn 45 minutes to an hour drive why in gods name did you buy this puppy. She had no answer. I told her about BYB. I believe she was sold a sick puppy. My heart is bleeding for this poor baby, there will be no sleep for me tonight. Part 2- She is feeding the puppy Iams puppy food, this is what the puppy was eating when she bought him, she does not measure food, uses the palm of her hand, kibble is a bit bigger than a pea but flat, she feeds 3 times a day, I told her she needs to free feed the puppy. (Puppy weighs 3.9 Lbs), she said the puppy gobbles up the food, he is always hungry, she said the vet told her if she is feeding the puppy 15 kibbles 3 times a day she is over feeding the pup. I know free feeding is advised, my concern is puppy will gobble up entire bowl then throw it up from over eating too fast. I suggested counting out 15 kibbles and feed every 3 hours (9AM-12-3-6 and 9pm). I don’t know how big or how small the kibble size is. I don’t want to mis-advise her, but feeding a 3 month old puppy less the 45 kibbles a day???? Any advice, suggestions I will pass over to her. I cannot believe she got this puppy without calling me first, she knows how I am about dogs.

| She can give some pure canned pumpkin, NoT pumpkin pie filling but Pure pumpkin or green beans for constipation if this is the issue, IF constipation is not the issue & it is the anal glands then she needs to try a whole diff diet as anal gland issues are caused by allergies so it may be environmental but it may be food allergy. Does the vet express the anals ? & are they full when expressed ? Also the hemorrhoid med is ok to use but there is no need to insert it into the rectum as the anal glands are actual pockets of skin on the outside of the anus. Cortaid can also be used & just put a dab of either on the finger & rub it in. |

| Puppy is not constipated, stools are normal, anal glands were not expressed the vet said they were swollen, my friend said he "pushed them back in", vet said use Prep. H inserted into rectum to reduce swelling. I asked if she saw any swelling of the anus , she said everything looks normal. What could the vet have "pushed" back in. Can a 3 month old puppy have impacted anal glands? Why would a 3 month pup yelp pass a little poop, run in circles, squat yelp again then finish pooping? I am at a loss, I never heard a pup doing this, and none of my 7 pups ever experienced this.

| OOps, I see that this is not your pup. Can you see if your friend can take a pic of this pups bum & post it here ? Also ask her if the pup recently had a haircut. Often groomers "Shave" the area & the hair will poke when there is movement during a bowel movement & the hair will poke them & the dog will have the exact reaction you describe. I always ask my groomer to use the scissors in that area so as not to cut too short for this very reason. |

| No hair cut, pup has not had all his shots yet, I have to ask about baths, I don't think she has but I'll ask her. I did tell her to make sure the anal area if free from stuck on poop , she said everything is clean. I told her to get another vet after some other things she told me. Thank you.

| I have been calling her and leaving messages, I know she had a vet appt. for last Friday, the visit was for 2nd shot, I told her to make a list of questions to ask the vet, this will be the new vet. I have been worried sick over this baby. As soon as I hear from her I will deff. update. I also told her she must pay attention to every word the vet tells her, question everything the vet does to the puppy, after posting this thread for her I spoke to her, told her anal glands are not inside a dog, I was so blown away the first conversation when she was telling me all about her new puppy and his issues I never thought to tell her anal glands are not inside a dog, she then said vet did not push in, vet pulled out, I got very annoyed with her, told her she needs to put on her thinking cap before she tells me things, I told her to make an account here on YT and ask her own questions and get things straight in her mind before she starts a thread and give correct information. She has only her smart phone to work with so I doubt that we will see her on YT. I am very upset with her, told her the least expensive thing about owning a dog is the purchase price, if a person cannot afford the vet bills they should not have a dog. OMG I can feel my blood pressure going up again, lol. I do know she will be free feeding this puppy, my concern is the occasional yelping when he poops.

| Puppy up-date (friends puppy) Puppy up-date, finally she returned my call. No more yelping when he poops. It was never determined what caused the puppy to yelp, well, let me put it this way, I believe if she was told she doesn’t remember. But the puppy is good now. She free feeds him and he gained a pound. I told her to pay very careful attention in the future to what the vet tells her, this way if there is a problem and needs to ask me I need to know every detail. Thank you all for your concern.
