| Threw Up All His Food After the Vet? hey YT I took my little buddy to the vet today for a 6 month check up, blood work, and made an appt for a much needed teeth cleaning. The vet said he looked good and gave him a clean bill of health. He's been acting funny for the past two hours, and I just realized that he threw up a pretty large pile of not-very-digested dry food. Anyone have any ideas around this? (It isn't new food) Thanks for the help |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | It could just be left over anxiety from the appt causing a funny tummy. How is he today?

| He seems more subdued this morning than usual. He walked over to his dry food, sniffed it, and walked away twice. I gave him a small helping of his blue mountain wet food, and he ate every bite of that... so weird !! Sometimes I wish these creatures could just tell us what was wrong in words it would be so much easier than guessing things. I'm at a loss. the ONLY thing that I can think of is that I caught him in the litterbox yesterday and I thing he snagged a piece or two of kitty poop normally the box is blocked off, but I had just changed it and he could access it. Could that have caused an upset tummy? (thought of that this morning!) |

| We have noticed that the day after a vet visit, Bella is prone to being a little off. With all we have been through in a short space of time, we always over-react.

| Looks like the culprit here is GERD. |

| Gerd? Sorry your poor baby had a tummy upset after his vet visit. Did he fast before the tests and did not eat for a long time? That can cause acidy stomach issues in some dogs...like mine! He could have just been very hungry and ate too fast, and regurgitated his food? If he tends to have GERD, Pepcid does a very good job at controlling that. When my dog went in for a dental I was worried about the long time before he ate, so the vet gave him a shot of Pepcid prior to surgery and he was fine after the dental. Sometimes a new bag of kibble can cause tum upsets as the quality control in some dog foods leaves a lot to be desired. Is he eating his dry food ok now? Hope he is better now. |

I made a list of holistic items to buy today to curb the symptoms of GERD moving forward (I think he has had this on and off for some time now, and I didn't realize what was going on!) He is going in for a dental / anesthesia in about 3 weeks, anything I should suggest to my doctor regarding his tummy ?? Thanks for your help | |

| Gerd Hello. I would check with your vet that the GERD diagnosis is in fact what your dog has. If so he will recommend the right dose of Pepcid ( Famatodine), if necessary. The minimum human pill size seems to be 10 milligrams and these would have to be carefully split. The dose I have used, on advice of my vet is: 0.25 To 0.5 milligrams per pound dog weight, once or twice a day. So a 10 pound dog would need 2.5 to 5.0 milligrams once or twice a day. I found that splitting the 10 mg pill into quarters for my 10 pound dog is not that easy! For a smaller dog it would be even harder to split to the right dose. Perhaps the vet has smaller pills? But please ask the vet before giving the meds. If you feel your dog cannot go for too long without food without getting a tummy, acid, attack, I suggest you tell the vet this fact. My vet said he would give my dog a shot of Pepcid( Famatodine) prior to dental surgery to keep the acid at bay. This worked very well and my dog was doing well and eating that night! It seems that sometimes vets do dentals later in the day and the poor fasting dog goes for ages without food! Hoping your baby is doing well now and that the dental is trouble free too |

| Unfortunately, things have gotten more confusing. The vomiting has stopped, but he's been licking the air, and just seems generally more lethargic than usual. I assume he's in pain somehow. The blood work came back as totally fine so I'm hoping it's nothing serious. He's been eating and drinking, although this morning he was less enthusiastic about his food. Could've been because I had hidden Pepcid AC in it and he smelled it? I'm glad I work from home and can at least keep an eye on him, but we may be heading back to the vet. |

| Pepcid Thanks for your reply. Good that you checked with the vet and he says it is OK. What weight is your dog and what time of day does he tend to get GERD or tummy issues? My dog can throw up bile in the early morning so I give him the Pepcid only at night before bed. If your dog has trouble in the day then perhaps a morning dose would be best? If early morning AND day, one can give the Pepcid twice a day. I gave the doses on my previous mail, but you could also check with your vet. If the dog is small and only around 5 pounds then splitting the human 10 mg pill could be hard! Hope your dog is better now. Just read your latest post, but I would still appreciate the answers to my queries? Could be giving the wrong dose or at the wrong time for his issues? | Dose The quarter (2.5mg) of a 10 mg tablet sounds good for a regular dose. Feeding a whole 10 mg sounds a lot last night in my opinion ( except for a very large Yorkie!) and although it may not have been dangerous, it would probably take his appetite away for a day or more! That is probably why he was not that hungry this morning? Perhaps you could wrap the 1/4 tablet in some treat before you add it to his food, so he does not smell the Pepcid. I get my Pepcid made up by a Vet compounding pharmacy. It is chewy and tastes of chicken. It is easy to split and my dog likes the taste! It is of course more expensive! Hoping he feels better soon on the bland diet for a day or so. Good luck |
