| Emergency: Anemic 9wo puppy Hello, I have a 9 weeks Yorkshire Terrier bought from the internet 2 weeks ago. First problem was that he was not eating. He ate caned food once, the second time he refused. He ate chicken once and the refused and so on with any new food. Then he ejected 2-3 roundworms of very big size, we went to the vet and after a deparasitation he ejected 7-9 mature roundworms again, wich for his size I think is enourmous. Took him to 3 vets, now I am at the 4th vet wich made a blood test and we found out that he is anemic and has very low red blood cells count. The vet gave perfusion with glucose, amino acids and vitamins everyday for 6 days now. He is still in a very bad shape, has diarheea and his red blood cell count is tue same. I don't know what to do more, I am force feeding him, he has a decent day and then he is in a very bad shape again. He like very spirulina very much and ate uncooked chicken liver for few days. Today he ate nothing on his own and I am afraid for his life. Any advice means a lot. Thanks in advance |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | You should NOT give a puppy this young raw food! I would take the puppy back to the vet As SOON as possible. Get some Nutrical. Try some Royal Canin puppy food if the vet says it's OK and you don't know what food your pup was on before you got it. You are right, your puppy's life is in serious condition. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and welcome to YT. I'm sorry your little one is doing so badly . Don't give any more liver - it's *way* too overwhelming for many adult systems, let alone a young puppy. If you can, just feed cooked chicken and rice. Also give Nutrical. Given the extent of worms this poor pup had, I imagine he is really very sick - and I think this will go on for awhile to be honest...he's going to need some time to heal. Stay in very close contact w/ your vet, and take him in again if he starts to go really badly.

| Changing foods will cause diarrhea, I would boil boneless chicken breast and boil up some rice, mix the chicken with the rice, this is very bland food and will not upset the babies system. Chicken and rice is NOT for long term feeding. I would check with my vet as to what you should be feeding him. If you see no improvement I would seek a specialist. These lil babies can go down fast, some vets are not familiar with small breed dogs. Never give a babies this young RAW MEATS. After just re-reading and see you are force feeding, I would be seeking a specialist. 4 vets and still no success, I wouldn't wastes to much more time , if you have this baby 2 weeks and he is 9 weeks old, someone sold him at 7 weeks old which is way to young to be taken away from the momma. PLEASE find a specialist NOW before you loose this little baby.

| He is in a good form today, running and playing but I am pretty sure it is just temporary. Thanks for your answers. I wouldn't give him raw meat, as I would try to get him used with eating what he has to. But with this critical situation, the vet told me to give anything (almost anything) he eats cause the priority here is to eat so he can recuperate, and regain the red blood cells. The biggest of my concerns is that he may have some disease the vet is missing as here in my country the Yorkie is not as popular. I was thinking of liver shunt and I am going to the biggest dog hospital in my country next week to finally find out what he has and if the damage the roundworms did is recoverable. Do you guys have any experience with these specific diseases of yorkies? And do you know how can I feed him as he doesn't like any food anymore? |

Have you tried canned dog food yet? I'm afraid to suggest it though as it may cause diarrhea. Does the vet sell a prescription food for low-appetite dogs...bc our vets over here sell that kind of food. You could also try sprinkling some Parmesan cheese powder on his food, as it's nice and pungent smelling and enticing for dogs. But if there is truly no appetite whatsoever, then he really needs to see the vet again as something is definitely wrong. I don't have roundworm experience but for liver shunt, read this: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...obias-dvm.html

| Honestly, even if there is a liver shunt, chances are that the puppy is still too young to show any symptoms of it as he is just getting to the age where the liver is starting to operate fully on its own.

| If I were you, I would be feeding chicken baby food at least every 2 hours, depending on how much baby is eating....let him lick as much off your finger as he is able to do....if he wont lick it off your finger, you must get a syringe from the vet/doctor, load it up with the chicken baby food, and squirt at least 6-9cc, in 1-2cc squirts, on the back of this babys tongue, at least EVERY 2-3 hours AROUND THE CLOCK.....get Pedialyte for human babies, and give this to the pup aqs drinking water....if he wont take it by himself, you will have to give hime about 6cc with every meal he eats. Dont dilute the baby food chicken with the pedialyte water.....he needs all the nourishment you can get into him....give the food first and finish with the pedialyte. You are going to have to feed like this until this baby manages to get a grip on life and living. After maybe 2 weeks of doing this, advance feedings to every 4 hours around the clock. Now you can also add a little Royal Canin canned puppy food for newborns to the chicken baby food....he may really like the Royal Canin puppy mousse....most of them adore this stuff.....you have to be sure this baby is eating 1cc of puppy food for every ounce of body weight around the clock, every 4 hours.....continue with the pedialyte as hydration, with a syringe if he will not drink it on his own.....he has to have about 12cc of water every 4 hours to keep him hydrated. This will get you through the next 4 weeks....next step is advance feedngs to every 4 hours during the day, like 8am-12noon-4pm-8pm-12midnight.....You need to play it safe with supplementing his metabolism and sugar levels with NutraCal 1 inch, between meals and last thing before bedtime to carry him thru the night until his next feeding. Lets see how you and the pup are doing in 6 weeks, and we will talk about adjusting feedings! Good luck, it is terribly hard work, but this baby deserves no less than this attempt to keep him alive. Do NOT give this already debilitated baby ANY raw food....I almost killed an entire litter of HEALTHY babies tring to do the "best thing possible" for them, and feeding them during weaning, raw food....their systems can not handle the barrage of bacteria that is released into thier guts and it will kill him.....
