| Samson has Pancreatitus. Help. My 4 year old little boy, Samson, has always been a puker. At least 2 times a week, he would throw up yellow bile in the early morning. I usually gave him a few Cheerios, something kinda dry, to try to settle his tummy. I never knew why he was puker, but now, I am wondering if there is a connection to what he has now. On Sunday, I came home from the store to what looked like 2 piles of black jelly. I didnt realize what was wrong with him. Monday, my VET was closed, but I took him to an animal hospital. He was dehydrated, they gave him fluids. Blood work showed Pancreatitis. They sent me home with "give him a bland diet and lots of fluids". That night, he vomitted most of the night. He was so sick, poor baby. Next morning, I was at my own VET when they opened the doors. They saw him right away. They told me that without further treatment, he would die. Right now, I am giving him IV fluids morning and night. He is on antibiotics, (because he showed an overgrowth of some bacteria), and he is on sucralfate every 8 hours, fortiflora in the evenings and honey or Caro when his blood sugar seems low. They also sent me special gastro canned dogfood. I have been giving him 2 TBS of that food in the am. I crush his sucralfate up and mix it in. I do this each time he has to take the sucralfate, which is every 8 hours. He has not thrown up since Monday night, but today (Wed) he finally had another bowel movement. I looked "better" than Sundays Jellified, mucousy BM, but todays did still have a bit of blood in it. He is crying for food! I feel so bad not allowing him to eat when he seems like he is so hungry. do you think it would be safe to give him a TBS of some cooked brown rice with his TBS of canned food? Do you think he can have a TBS of apple sauce? Any pointers from any Yorkie owners who have experience with Pancreatitis, PLEASE share!! Thanks so much!! |

| I don't know if I would give brown rice without talking to your vet first. I think brown is harder to digest than white. Not sure but you should ask your vet. Hope your baby feels better soon.

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk. I am sorry to hear Samson has pancreatitis. I haven't been through it personally, but my friends have. I would stick to the prescription food only. Once Samson is back to himself, you could consult a vet dietician like http://www.petdiets.com for recommendations on safe foods. Once a dog has had pancreatitis, the dog is at greater risk for life for recurrence. A restricted diet can help prevent another bout. Sending best wishes for Samson.

| Samson Poor baby. P is a horrible disease, but well treatable lf caught early. If the vet prescribed food and the dog is hungry that is good news. I think well cooked white rice is better with plenty of water in it would help to fill him up if he is hungry. The prescription canned foods are 80% water and not very satisfying as it is so bland. Later with the vet approval, perhaps some low fat boiled chicken breast could be added? My vet also gave him an antacid, Pepcid, but perhaps the sucralfate will be enough to control excess stomach acid? Hoping your baby will soon improve on the meds and hydration. To minimize the possibility of another bout of P it is usually suggested one feeds a low fat diet afterwards. No fatty treats or table food either!! I feed mine Hills prescription Low fat ID kibble and occasionally canned and he is doing really well on it. Good luck , and get well soon Samson Last edited by dottiesyrky; 07-02-2015 at 06:42 AM. |

| Pancreatitis is a very serious illness and it can become life threatening. It's best to follow your vet's strict advice. I would not feed brown rice (I would use white). I would not use applesauce. My dog Barney was 5 when he had an episode of pancreatitis. He was fine for 5 years after when he had it a second time. At age 10, he was placed on a very low fat diet (home cooked) and has been on that diet now for five years (he's turning 15 next month). Diet is extremely important but it's not the only issue with pancreatitis.

YT Addict | Poor Samson... Tink is on prescription food (Hills ID Gastro) -I would stick with that unless your vet states otherwise. In my experience, it takes a few days to get to their normal self - and even normal poops (2-3 days in my experience). Just a word on the sucralfate - it did cause Tink to become constipated, so something to watch for - but the sucralfate did help her belly. But I think it's good that he's wanting to eat, with my experience that means they are feeling better. Best wishes! |
