YT 2000 Club Member | Dementia? Our precious little 13 year old toy poodle, who we have had since she was 8 weeks old, has been diagnosed with sclerosis in both eyes do to age. However, I am wondering if she doesn't have early stages of dementia due to her recent behavioral changes we have been observing, etc, growling and barking a lot at the two other fur butts in the house and sometimes appearing lost. She has always been very alert and extremely calm and gentle with everyone and all animals. She does have some back leg joint issues and is on joint supplement. Her heart checks out to be very healthy. Her recent yearly check up went well. She is on heart guard and flea prevention and has been on both for years. I know her behavioral changes could be do to her decrease in vision, as the vet which we trust stated, but is there anything we can do if she does have the beginning of dementia as in medication. We already keep the furniture, food and water bowls, pet beds etc in same place. She remains playful, eats well, urinates & poos as usual, very loving and is Mommy and Daddy's precious baby. Your advice is appreciated. Thank you.

| Sclerosis of the eye doesn't affect vision in most older dogs until they are really old like 18. I've had two ophthalmologists tell me this. Usually dementia makes them less aggressive not more aggressive. I wonder if something else is bothering her. Have you considered trying adequan shots for the joints? I've done a month of twice weekly adequan shots on two of my 15 year olds with amazing results. Best wishes.

| It's difficult to know if your little girl has dementia, but I've attached a link to two checklists you can do. My little girl, Ashley, had very subtle changes that became more obvious when she was sixteen. The changes you described may be caused by other things. Ashley took Anipryl for her dementia. It helped with her anxiety and confusion. I hope your little girl feels better. http://www.cdsindogs.com/PDF/CDSInDogs/ANIPRYL.pdf CDSInDogs

| I know my little JR terrier has diabetes and has gone blind . Today I found her wondering around the laundry room as if she didnt know the way out and has been there dozens of time , well since I rescued her 8 yrs ago. I havent moved a thing because of this and some times I feel it is a form of dementia but she is only a little over 8 and my vet said it was her blindness and it confuses her at times. |

YT 2000 Club Member | Thank you to the ones that has offered their advice. I will look into the things suggested, I appreciate all the advice I can get. We love our little Prissy so much and want to assist her in any way we can to make her as comfortable as possible. I will mention the above suggestions to my Vet this Monday when I take Prissy in for her dental.
