| Brown/black specks on yorkie's skin? Help please :( Hi everyone. My baby is about to turn six months old and she has been healthy so far. However today I noticed that the skin on her back is starting to look darker than the rest of her skin. I looked closer and noticed little brown/black specs all over her neck and upper back. Her belly and legs are fine so far. I thought it could be flea dirt but it looks like it's everywhere where her hair follicles are. She's been acting normal but im still very worried. Could it be dry skin? Is this a disease? I would try to take a picture but my camera wouldn't be able to take a decent quality picture since the specks are so small. Any advice? Thank you so much for reading! |

| Yorkie skin in areas where the hair is dark blue/black will often appear to have a darker cast than the belly or where blonder hair grows. If there is a significant color difference or visible large, irregular patches of darker skin, I would have your vet take a look. Tiny specs can be flea dirt, as you originally suspected. Are the specs removable? Sometimes fleas can hide very well and all it takes is one of those little boogers to make a mess. Does your baby itch at all? Specks can also be a sign of a yeast overgrowth or other skin conditions that can be secondary to another illness. Teddy had a little bit of black specking on his ears when he was younger that I suspect was either yeast or like a 'mold' from being wet. I forget what this mold is really called (exhibitors here have written about it relative to dogs with longer coats). It went away after 3 baths in which I scrubbed well with a good shampoo and was careful to dry his head thoroughly with a dryer on low heat. One last possibility: vasculitus. That would be the extreme. Sometimes a reaction to a vaccine.

| I just had her groomed for the first time last week. I use Yorkie Splash & Shine shampoo and asked them to use it as well. Maybe they didn't dry her well? I will try bathing her and drying her well and see if that helps! Thank you |

Teddy has to be dried thoroughly, whereas Max can lie down soaking wet and not have any problems. Massage the speckled spots well with the shampoo and rinse, rinse, rinse. If the specs persist, have the vet take a look.
