| Pads are deteriorating! Our yorkster Gatsby has had a nasty issue going back to last winter. The pads on his paws are very thin and have lots of tears and cracks in them. We have tried ointments and antiseptics, but they are not effective. He hardly walks outside but even on short walks his pads cant hold up, which is very strange since we used to go on very long walks and he has never had this issue before. He never chews his pads and I don't think it has anything to do with walking on hot blacktop. I have been picking him up when we cross the street but even walking on the sidewalk and grass we have this issue. Any recommendations please? I think we need some good shoes until we address the root cause of this... But the ones Ive seen don't hold up. His pad are not dry at all due to the moisturizer we apply, but we just can figure this out... |

| What does the vet say the issue is? I have never heard of this issue, without a clear definitive cause, like hot concrete/streets, excessive running on concrete (like some dogs develop in concrete runs in dog kennels), severe allergic reaction to chemicals sprayed in yards, contact with caustic agents used to melt snow/ice/prevent slipping on ice etc, etc. This is very interesting....please let us know what the vet has said about it.....you may need to see a dermatologist specialist. | Poor Gatsby! The moisturizer might actually be weakening his paw pads, softening them too much, making them more vulnerable. What brand is the moisturizer? Max once had a crack in one of his pads and the scar is still slightly visible. I used "Bag Balm" to help him heal. WalMart sometimes carries it in their pet section. Vermont's Original Bag Balm Ointment | Walgreens I didn't use it long-term or on his entire pad to avoid softening too much. I was also worried about him licking it. I wonder if "Musher's Secret" would help? Talk to Karen at AllDogBoots about shoes/sandals. She is a YT member. The challenge is to help his paw pads heal, but also allow them to toughen up to withstand walking outdoors. Sending my best to your little guy.

I know in humans the use of petroleum jelly in the nose for dryness is a no no and only water soluble lubricants are used. Petroleum jell,y which is an ingredient in Bag Balm can cause lipid pneumonia. I would think it carries the same hazard in dogs.

| This sounds awful Could it be something like a fungus? There are so many possibilities. I would have been to the vet.

| Thanks for the excellent ideas. I'm also concerned about over softening the pads. I will investigate different products mentioned and the shoes in the short term. The vet totally missed this and thought it was a nail issue last time we took him and explained the bleeding. I also think it may be due to an allergy. Will take him again and get a better diagnosis. |
