| Open Fontanelle in 20 week yorkie Good evening, I have a previous yorkie named Lucy. She is 20 weeks old today and we saw a new vet that was closer to our home. She mentioned that she has a small open Fontanelle and with her being 20 weeks we need to watch her closely to see if it closes. She didn't seem too worried but I came home and googled and became concerned about the potential health risks. I bought her from what I thought was a reputable breeder and spent quite a bit for her. There's a one year health guarantee for genetic defects. The first vet we saw never mentioned this. I am very worried and would appreciate any advice! She is playful and growing well. She's super playful and I've seen her bump her head which scares me now that I read about it online. Is there a chance it will close? Should I contact the breeder? I brought her home at 13 weeks so the breeder should have been aware of this before selling her. Thank you!! |

| I can't believe it, I had the exact thing happen to me ( I mean exactly the same) Got Zoey at 13 weeks, first Vet didn't notice, she was 20 weeks when the second Vet told me about it. The opening is very small (Vet said) but I am still extremely worried that she will bump her head. By the way the Vet said it's because she is soooo small that she has this problem.....she is only 2 lbs at 22 weeks. How big is Lucy? I would never give her up so I guess even if the breeder said he would take her back "that's not going to happen". I will just have to deal with it. Iwould think good breeders like to know if there is a problem even if we keep the pup, just for better breeding programs in the future. Well, all the best with your baby!!!!!! PS My Vet said there is a chance it will close. Last edited by Belladea; 03-11-2015 at 04:59 AM. |

| There are a lot of wonderful breeders who I'm sure will be along soon ..... but I would probably say make contact with the breeder just to let her know what your vet has said so the breeder is aware of it in case it does become a bigger issue....

| How big is it? Your breeder should have mentioned it to you, even if it is small, simply to keep you from "discovering it" and then worrying about it. If it is small, it will more than likely close....babys skull is still growing and those little ones will close....no big deal, nothing to worry about. If it is the size of a dime, you should contact the breeder about that! That is a little large and some cause for concern....watch baby closely....this is like the "soft spot" on a human baby's head....it CAN be a concern for hydrocephalus.....that may never happen in your pup...buldging eyes and a dome shaped head accompanied by an open fontanelle, really bears watching.... If your breeder is reputable, and she failed to mention it, then it is probably small and of no concern....she was not impressed and saw no issue with it and just neglected to mention it....not really a big deal.
