| Onion/trash eating help!!! I'm desperate!!! I have a 15 pound yorkie (Mango.) My dog ate trash... Can anyone help give some opinions? I recently got an apartment and have a roommate. I should have known better knowing how irresponsible she is (I didn't find that out til we moved in.) But we have been keeping our trash in just a trash bag in the kitchen because our little can overflows so quickly, so I figured a big bag would be a better option til we buy a big trash can. I'm so stupid... We made beef stew which had onion, potatoes (red), carrots, celery, beef, and beef broth. I put all the "throw away" veggies in a plastic bag and tied it and put it in the trash, thank goodness, so that never got eaten thank goodness. That was where the majority of the onion was/raw veggies. I had a bowl of soup on Thurs, and didn't eat it all, left some onion, potato, and carrots in the bowl, dumpted it in the trash since we don't have a garbage disposal. Stupid me. Mango was showing some interest in the trash, so I decided to gate off the kitchen and bring his food/water bowl in the living room. I told my roommate to keep the gate up so he wouldn't go in there, but she didn't, so when I got back home, he had eaten whatever was in there. Probably a few decent sized bites of onion, and who knows what else. Thursday night he had huge poop, very soft and you could hardly get it with a bag, and threw up a lot of chunks, and continued to have accidents that night (diarrhea and cried when it wouldn't come out.) I called the 24 hour emergency vet hospital, they thought he would be fine if he just got what was in a bowl of soup...but they said if he continues to have trouble Friday to bring him in. Well he was okay all day on Friday, no poop at all...ate his normal dog food with rice. Friday night, he woke me up three times to go outside and had diarrhea and threw up in bed. He looked so guilty, and both nights after the accidents, he slept on my floor and usually whines if he can't be in bed with me, but looked miserable. Saturday (today) he is still having little bits of diarrhea, but has a yellow/orange membrane type mucus around it, MAYBE a bit of a red tint? I'm not sure, I'm a worried mama, and I don't have a lot of money, no college degree (yet) and I work as a nanny, so I'm trying to avoid the vet for blood work at all costs unless Mango really needs to be seen. Today I took away his normal dog food, and just giving him rice, but he won't eat it (which isn't uncommon, he's a picky eater, so I melted a teaspoon of PB which usually gets him to eat, and he has no interest in that or water, he usually doesn't drink a lot anyways, but i'm still worried. I'm just hoping that whatever he ate just made him have an upset stomach and doesn't have onion poisoning....his gums look fine, no skin rashes that I see, his urine is dark yellow which is normal for him. He seems tired, maybe a bit more drowsy than usual, but maybe not? He is a lap dog, and will lay on me for hours or lay on the couch for hours while I paint or use the computer, happily on his back with his belly in the air lol. I need my mind to be put to ease, I will take him in if I have to, but i want to wait until monday if so because of weekend emergency fees...any experience with this? |

| Oh, poor baby boy....poor you....as far as the roommate, I would help her remember this by requiring HER to pay for the vet bill as this was her fault! She should at the very least, buy the new garbage can, large with a lid! Dont forget...the pup WILL NOT LEARN that eating garbage makes him sick, and given the opportunity to raid discarded table scraps from the garbage sack, he will gleefully do so again! I doubt your pup got enough onion to give him onion poisoning. If he continues to have those poops with that "red tinted, yellow orange mucoid membrane" around it, I would take the stool into the vet, tell them since you really cant afford to have the vet see the pup, would the vet look at the stool and see if it looks like the pup needs to be seen. They may feel sorry for you and tell you to go ahead and bring the pup in for the vet to look at..... |

| My first thought is not a problem with onion, but possible pancreatitis. He has had vomiting too many times IMO for you to wait until Monday. Pancreatitis can turn bad quickly and can kill them. It may not be that but it sounds like he needs to be seen and evaluated today. As far the the gums, what you really need to test is how they feel. If you lift his lip and touch his gum, it should be wet to the touch. If it is dry and sticky feeling, he may be dehydrating. If I were you, I would go to an emergency clinic and at least let them examine him....maybe do just basic blood work if they feel it is needed. He may need IV fluids. Yes, it can cost a bit, but if you let it go it could get much worse and in turn more expensive. Perhaps some medication will turn him around. Please let us know how things are going.

| In my opinion he is obviously hurting and needs to go to the vet now. You risk him getting worse and possible dying if it is something really serious and you don't take him in.

| It takes quite a bit of onion for hemolytic anemia if that's what you're worried about. I too agree that I'd be more worried about gastritis or pancreatitis. Please see a vet.

| Thank goodness, my Mango seems to be 100% back to normal today. Been giving him rice, no solid dog food yet, but will mix some in with the rice today. Went for a walk last night, and he was fine. No symptoms of being sick anymore, but anymore episodes and i'll take him in. Hopefully that was the last of it yesterday morning since he hasn't vomitted again. |

| I'm glad he's feeling better, I'd seriously consider putting him in your room when you aren't home. I'd be afraid of him getting into other stuff or running out the door. |

| Had another throw up episode. I gave him dog food (about 1/2 cup) and minutes after he threw it back up.. but they were all still whole pieces of food in clumps of throw up... I'm thinking he was really hungry and didn't chew the food properly. I'm going to break up his food into smaller pieces and see if that helps. I can't wait for this lease to be up and get a place by myself or another roommate whose more mindful of these things! I totally get mistakes happen, but i've found advil on the floor and chocolate wrappers laying around... she's overall just not responsible. Doesn't do her own dishes. I can make it til august I hope! |
