| HELP liver shunt seizures I have a tiny 3lb 3 year old female who has a liver shunt and has been doing well on just meds and diet up until Friday when she started having seizures. Vet put her on phenobarbital. That has slowed the seizures but her pacing and head pressing has increased dramatically. She is lethargic, drinking gallons of water and wants to eat nonstop. Does anyone have any experience with liver shunt and seizures? Vet tells me we are at end stage liver disease and that the phenobarb is buying her some time. I don't know how much time or will it be quality time. Any information would be greatly appreciated as we struggle with our decision. Thanks. |

| No they can't do surgery as she is too small and her shunt is internal. She's had the liver shunt condition since birth and nearly died at the age of 4 months. I rescued when she was 14 months old and she was near death at that time. Since then her liver shunt condition has been treated successfully with medication and diet. |

YT 500 Club Member | Sorry So very sorry to hear that. She is very lucky she found you. The head pressing and all sounds very discouraging. Just love her with all your might. I lost my Yorkie due to GME which is a very aggressive neurological disease. These Are our babies and we will go to ends of the earth for them. Please keep an update. |

| What diet and meds is she on? How did they conclude that it is intrahepatic?

| She is on a low protein diet, new one from Hills. She's on lactulose and metronizadol and now phenobarbitol. I lost my other girl to Cushings disease two weeks ago so it has been and continues to be a very difficult time at our house. |

| She had ultrasounds done when we rescued her to determine what type of liver shunt she had. |

| You cannot diagnose intrahepatic shunt by ultrasound. It also is not 100% diagnostic for liver shunt. She perhaps could have life saving surgery. I suggest a specialist ASAP. Good luck!

| She was seen by a specialist when we rescued her. We flew from the Island to the mainland where she underwent a complete battery of tests. The specialist said she was not a candidate for surgery and recommended we try treating her with meds and diet and we could maybe buy her some time but she would not likely live very long. That was a year and a half ago. |

| I am so sorry about your little girl with liver shunt, and also your recent loss to a pup with Cushings. That is a lot for you to deal with, and my heart goes out to you. I have no advice, but will keep you and your pup in my prayers.

| Hill's L/D? No Denosyl or milk thistle? Has the vet upped the lactulose yet?

| Also might ask the vet about Kepra. It is not as hard on their system as pheno. Cut even more protein out of their food if you can by feeding veggies and oats like Cheerios which may help with the symptoms. I would agree that you could as if the vet can up the Lactulose, it may help some as well.
