| we need help Hey guys! I have a teacup yorkie, currently 9 years old. Im getting really worried about him, The thing is, he smells really bad ( vet said its a skin infection and gave us a special shampoo which we are using and so far it doesnt help), he doesnt want to eat (he has been on human food for a long period now but vet advised that he needs to eat dog food even if he doesnt want to and that i need to starve the dog even for 4 or 5 days if neceseary, giving him only dog food and nothing else.), he has lost weight and is very thin and slim, I think the vet gave me a bad advice and I made 4 dishes for my dog today, I cooked him meat without spices, have him a bowl of dog food, a plate of ordinary weenie(not dog food) and another plate of human dish. He barely touched any. He drinks alottttt of water lately. He doesnt want to go for walks, I literally have to carry him outside, put him down (he pees where I put him down and sometimes doesnt even lift his leg) and when he is done i need to carry him back to the house. Inside he is completely without life and just sleeps all the time and does nothing, I honestly forgot the sound of his bark. We had a teeth operation done on him approx a year ago when he smelled bad and our vet said its because of teeth, so they pulled out his teeth and now he only has the 4 large ones left. I'm starting to think our vet is an amateur guy but nobody else has problems with this vet and there are no other vets arround here. Please reply if you know anything I can do to help my little yorkie |

| Also I forgot to mention this, When I came home yesterday, he didnt have his eyes open, so I took him to a vet and the vet cleaned the eyes and said he also has an eye infection and that all these simptoms are not connected. |

| None of this sounds good for your poor little fella. If it were me I would go further from home and find a reputable vet that could examine him...something is going on. It is worth any distance to drive for another opinion. To suggest you starve him for 4 or 5 days is ridiculous IMO. You sound very concerned and want him well so I say find another vet who will get to the bottom of all his ailments...and best of luck, your little guy deserves to feel better!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Gosh, something is really wrong here - and I'd find another vet ASAP for this poor little guy. There is a reason for the smell, and he likely needs antibiotics or antifungals. His energy level is not normal. If he has an eye infection, he'll need a prescription for it...do you have one? This kiddo needs a full blood workup done, for starters.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Yeah I am on board with finding another Vet. Is there ,even if it is a 2 hour drive a teaching hospital you could get into? I would go and just sit in the waiting until they saw me. 9yrs old is entering into the Senior years. What I like to do annually with my seniors is what we call here a Senior Blood Test Panel. For you I would also suggest bringing in a urine sample and a fecal sample. Get those tested. Just like in humans drinking a lot of water could possibly indicate diabetes, but also a whole slew of other things. Here are a few ideas to entice him to eat; sprinkle a little bit of freshly grated Parmesan cheese over his food. Cut up the food very small, and make sure it is at at least room temperature. You can also try hand feeding him from your lap. For right now feed him what-ever he will eat, then gradually add in some kibble with the fresh chicken or beef - what-ever is the meat that you are using. The smell - You can try mixing a few drops of tea tree oil in distilled water and spraying lightly over his coat. Brush through his hair. The eyes I would suggest immediately for one week switching him over to either Gerbers Baby Water (found in Wallmart), distilled water, or pure spring water. Get some of those flat make up remover pads- not cotton balls - those flat things (sorry I don't know what to call them), and using warm water, soak the pads, and very gently wash his eyes from inner corner to outer corner. If you are used to putting in eye drops for now I would use a prepared mixture of eye solution for contact lens wearers.

| I agree with the others, find a different vet. Something is seriously wrong and you should not be starving your pup. Good luck and keep us updated!

| I would drive a distance and go to another vet for a second opinion. Did your vet say why he needed dog food? If he is missing vitamins and minerals, you can add a supplement such as Balance It to human food. I could even grind up dog kibble and mix it in with his favorite food. I can't imagine a vet thinking its okay for a small old dog should go 4/5 days without food.

| Thanks for all the answers guys! I took him to another vet which is some driving away today and even though it was not working hours due holidays he let us in and examined my puppy. He said that he cannot say for sure what is wrong and he took a blood sample, he also tried to feed him some high nutrion recovery dog food, but ofcourse he did not want to eat it. The vet said i need to leave my dog there over night on infusion. I'm picking him up tomorrow and I will let you know what was wrong once he has fully examined my doggy. |

| Wonderful that you found some one and your pup will stay for testing. Unfortunate you had a long drive, but, these babies depend on us to take care of them. We have to do all that we can to ensure they get proper care. I am keeping your little baby in my prayers hoping it is not to serious.

| So, today the vet said that blood values showed that it is possible my dog has cancer. My yorkie is still there and I need to pick him up in about 5 hours and we will know more then, after some more tests. Keep your fingers crossed |
