| Hypothermia Emergency Hey all! I sorry about the long post, but I would appreciate experienced advice. I am new to the forum as well as a new owner of a 8.5 week old yorkie. I am also new to this breed and have gotten off to a very bad beginning!!. We picked up the puppy 2 nights ago. He was very small (1.5 lbs), but had been weened from the momma. We brought him home, and I have kept him wrapped up and such and also have been trying to get him to adjust and start eating. The pet store told me to begin dry puppy food mixed with a little wet puppy food. I told her he had not started eating hard food yet but was being fed a mixture of goat milk, yogurt, and soft puppy food. She insisted he should start on the hard food for his teeth.?? Anyway, I warmed about 1 tbs on Saturday morning, and he ate all this. He had also drank water on Friday night and sat. morning from a bowl. Throughout the day, I tried to feed him again, but he wouldn't eat but did drink. He ate very little last night and had some water. I wrapped him up and put him in the bed with me. I went to sleep, and he managed to get up and fell out if the bed. I got him up, and he quit crying. So, I didn't think he was hurt? I wrapped him back up and put him down in the basket I had for him next to my bed. A couple of hours later, he woke me up. I didn't want to put him back in the bed, so I put him in my bathroom and tried to give him some water. He would not drink any and seemed very lethargic. I took him outside and he couldn't stand. I thought he was hurt from falling out of the bed but when I rubbed and pulled on his limbs he didn't cry?? He didn't appear to be in any pain. I decided to take him to the ER. They took his temp and it was 97(very cold). His heart rate was normal. His pupils were normal and he responded to stimuli normally (i.e. when they drew blood he jerked and such)? They did not seem to think he needed any X-rays due to the fall, but dr. did say that he was extremely cold, and that this could cause the lethargy. His blood sugar was high but she said that was probably expected because I had given him about 30 ml of Karo and water with a syringe before I left the house. Also about 20 ml of Ensure. They wanted to keep him for random bld sugar check throughout the night, iv fluids, antibiotics via iv for sticky stool, and night care. The total was $500. I didn't have the money. His temp had warmed up to 106 by this time.. Anyway, I had to take the antibiotic with me, the supplement they provided and I'm on my own.. They said to give him the supplement every 2-3 on his tongue. If he'd eat to let him. They said to keep him warm. I am scared to DEATH. Since I've gotten him home, I've given him one dose of the antibiotic, the supplement x3, water with a syringe, and I have kept him wrapped up and on a hot water bottle all day. I don't know what I did wrong and how this happened so fast but I need advice on how to help this puppy survive. He was negative for all worms, but she was concerned that his belly was tight and perhaps bloated? I think this could be due to a change in his diet? All advice is welcome. Please respond!! Should I do the goat milk mixture or just do the supplement. I never thought something like this could happen so quick. Could he have possibly gotten stressed due to falling? The ER doctor didn't think so. She thought it was all due to his temp, sugar, size, and immature liver. I will make an appt with my regular vet in the morning, but I don't want him to die tonight! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and welcome to YT. First, this little baby shouldn't have been taken from his Momma until 12 weeks old - so that's part of why you're seeing such vulnerability here - coupled w/ his size etcetera. You need to go back to whatever the BREEDER was feeding him, and stick to only that for a good 3 weeks before making *any* changes at all. He's only been alive for 8 weeks....remember that - he is very vulnerable from being taken from his Mom and littermates, causing great stress on its own. During this time of big change/stress...you do not want to make any more changes for this little one. Also give the supplement that the vet told you to. And you've got to figure out a way to keep this kiddo warm. Get a hot water bottle perhaps. They also make heated beds, but they're not cheap. As you can now see, when something goes wrong w/ these babies - it can go wrong VERY fast - so you did the absolute right thing in going immediately to the vet. Keep us posted on how this little one does, hang in there, and just know that with proper care you'll be able to take care of him .

| I hope your little baby is doing better. Although 97 degrees is very low, 106 degrees seems awfully high. Please let us know how your little boy is doing, and ask us anything to help you with getting him stronger and healthier.

| Oh I apologiZe on the temp it was 100.6.:/. So that's in normal range I think? Puppy was able to stand and walk last night!!!. He was up all night pretty much, but I have kept him very warm with a heating pad and also have the hot water bottle against him all the time! I fed him the supplement through the night and also water with syringe. He drank from water bowl once during the night too. He also went tee tee twice, once on me and him and once in the bathroom floor. Not taking him outside in cold air. I will go today to get the goat milk and yogurt and some more wet food and add this in today. Should I call the breeder and get specifics about this? He did not seemed bothered by the baby leaving at all??? He gave very little info except for paper and shot/wormer record. The ER vet said to treat him as though he had not been wormed or had shots though. Puppy is on the antibiotic so hopefully that will help to clear up stomach issues too? Kinda worried about him getting constipated, but I guess if he hasn't had anything but gu and liquid than he wouldn't need to poo?? I feel so bad for not being more informed about a pup this small? I rescued my lab mix straight from the ditch and his estimated age (according to the vet and his teeth) was 8 weeks. Totally different story here for this precious little baby. But I feel ok now with not being able to leave him overnight at the ER as he did improved with my care during the day yesterday and through the night he was very active and vocal!!. I'm just gonna keep him warmed and sugared. Apt for regular vet this week. So anyway, I will keep everybody posted on how he improves and what his normal vet says! Also how the goat milk and yogurt works out? I have never heard of that mixture before but that's what I'm gonna get for the next 3 weeks like Wylie's mom recommended! Thank you so much for responding! I'm getting more comfortable but know he is still very critical. |
