| -3 year old yorkie with skin issues, at my wits end! Bear is my first dog ever. I adopted him from a shelter when he was a puppy, the shelter had shut down a puppy mill or at least took in the puppies. But since day one he has had terrible skin issues! Super itchy like red patches that pus over. He has been to the vet more times than I can count they always prescribe smilecef (spelling?). I have also changed his food to wellness ocean blend. He gets this allergies or sores year around so I don't know what he is allergic to he is also on advantix for fleas. I am doing the best I can but he is starting to cost me more than I can afford and I don't know what else I can do. Any advice would be great. |

| Have they done any allergy testing to see what exactly he is allergic to? That would probably help a lot....may be cheaper in the long run of things. |

| They told me since it is year round it is genetic. I have him on two 15mg does of Benadryl everyday to try to relieve his itching (he is 7lbs.) I feel like I am failing him as a dog mom but I don't know what else to do. I tried zymox shampoo and hot spot treatments. He is the best dog ever I just want him to be healthy as he seems super happy! |

| You need to go to a dermatologist. It could be food or anything.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I really feel for you as 2 of mine have allergies and it's mostly year round here in Arizona weather. Based upon my own very difficult experience w/ allergies, I'm going to give you the best possible advice ever: get thee to a Vet Dermatologist ASAP! You can either continue going to a generalist vet who clearly knows *nothing* (based upon how he is treating these allergies!) about allergies and keep paying him time after time -or- you can make probably ONE visit to a Vet Derm and get straightened out tremendously, right from the get go. I went to my generalist again and again and wasted tons of money -- then I finally went to a Derm and got on the right plan immediately. Stop the benadryl - it's useless in most dogs and also, it has to be given every 4-6 hrs to be effective (so, 4x a day). You could try either Zyrtec or Claritin - and both are a 1x a day dosage. BUT, I doubt those will help given the severity. From these allergies, your kiddo's skin is then developing pyoderma (staph intermedius) which is a common skin infection in dogs w allergies. Simplicef is the very best thing to treat it, so at least your vet got THAT right, lol. For year round allergies though, your kiddo then needs to be on either Atopica or Apoquel and/or get allergy testing and shots. | I had my brothers Beagle and Sparky had HORRIFIC skin problems....he was clearly what they call a "hot mess"....My brother even paid an allergist to fly down to Houston once a week to treat/see the dog....cost his thousands of dollars and Sparky never did get any relief. He was on all kinds of meds, he was on large doses of cortisone....that took a terrible toll on his entire body....I finally made the decision to have the unfortunate soul put to sleep when he went into kidney failure and started having seizures.... I agree, your baby needs to be seen by a dermatologist. While that may be expensive, you will come out better in the long run financially...as it is now, you are throwing money down a rabbit hole and getting no where with no results. Has your vet done skin scrapings for mites that cause demodectic mange? I really do think a dermatologist will get you a correct diagnosis, get you on a treatment plan, get this little soul on meds that are going to correct the situation and give him relief. |

YT 3000 Club Member | chester has enviromential allergies, and has very sensitive skin, I use all free and clear laundry and use no dryer sheets and use no sprays, plug in air freshners but sounds like he has a more serious issue going on. He needs to see a specialist. He uses temaril p when he is really itchy |

| At one time I spent two months taking Piccolo every week to the regular vet trying to get a skin issue figured out. I had no idea there was a vet that specialized in dermatology. Finally was referred went and she had her problem figure out the first visit. Others are recommending a vet dermo too and I think that type of doc can actually save money and grief in the long run. Hope you get things figured out.
