| Liver Problems MJ, my 6 month old puppy was wobbly and disoriented last night. Thanks to these forums, I knew that meant I needed to get him to the vet ASAP! I gave him fortical before we left. They did blood work and kept him overnight and they are doing an ultrasound now. He was having severe low blood sugar that they had to constantly stabilize through the night. The vet said the new blood tests showed after he ate today he had really high ammonia which is a big sign for the liver problem. The bill is at $2,000 right now. I have insurance (Healthy Paws) but I don't know what they will reimburse me for, yet. I just came here to vent, really. And to thank everyone who has contributed to these forums. Without the information on here, I wouldn't have known the signs to look out for and he could have died last night. I've never been much if a dog lover or even an animal lover in general, but MJ is my world. He might be the closest thing to a child I will ever have. Not many people understand that bond you can have with your dog, but I'm sure a lot of you on here do. <3 |

| Thank you for the above post. MJ update: Every time they take him off the IV, his glucose levels drop severely. So they have to keep him overnight again but are allowing me to visit with him tonight. The ultrasound looked good. They are not sure if it's his liver or not and are still running more tests. BEST case scenario, his liver is fine but I have to give him a pill EVERY 2 hours for the rest of his life. That means setting my alarm clock and waking up every night and if I get a job I have to hire a dog sitter for him every day I go to work. But I don't care. I'll do ANYTHING for my baby! Hopefully the pills are not expensive. I picked the perfect person to be his dad. My bf has been staying up all night researching medical things, talking with the vet, asking the right questions, and financing the whole thing. I just feel really blessed to have such a wonderful dog parent as my partner. |

| So sorry to hear about MJ. Hopefully they can find out quickly what is wrong with him and treat it accordingly. I hope it is nothing serious. If you are going to need care for him during the day you can go to care.com. We used care.com and found someone really good to care for my 2 boys (furbabies) years ago before they passed. They do background checks, etc on the individuals. Sending prayers to you, MJ and your boyfriend that it is nothing serious. Best of luck!

| Be sure you contact your breeder. This sounds like something she needs to be made aware of.....her health guarantee may cover partial reimbursment or pay for diagnostic testing.....she also needs to watch litters from the breeding pair that produced this baby as there may be a genetic component here. Good luck with your baby, praying for good news with the diagnosis and treatment. |

| I am really hoping that MJ gets better soon. Is it possible that he had a vaccine, medication, or ate something that could have caused the problem with his liver? I'm praying that, if it is a toxin, his liver will heal once it leaves his system. I'm very sorry you and MJ are going through this.

He was on Flagyl last week for diarrhea, but went off of it 4 days ago. I did switch his food which could be the cause of his diarrhea. But he's been eating plain chicken for 2 days before he went to the vet and now he has been on a plain diet for 4 days and still has explosive diarrhea and they have to keep him on the IV so his glucose doesn't drop. So they are all possibilities and I don't want to rule anything out, but I don't think it was the medicine, vaccine, or food because they were all given over 4 days ago and nothing has changed. The blood test they ran today came out good. They said if they can somewhat stabilize his glucose without an IV, he can come home today, but I'll have to give him pills. And they still don't have a final diagnosis and that bothers me. I do want him home, but I want to know the root of the problem and after 2 days and nights of testing, you would think they would have a solid answer by now. | |

| MJ update: They pulled him off the IV once again, and his glucose level dropped significantly. So there's no way he's coming home tonight. They want to do a special liver test, but he has diarrhea and I guess that interfere with the test. So they are trying their best to clear up his diarrhea and keep his glucose levels normal, so that hopefully tomorrow they can run the liver test and get to the bottom of this whole nightmare. They said he's been barking a lot, which is extremely weird for him to do. I've only heard him bark a handful of times, the whole time I've had him. So that tells me that he is stressed out, scared, and not happy. |

| He's only a baby and to be away from mom, locked in a cage with scary smells and strangers is stressful for him. But it's a good sign, he is alert and a feisty lil boy. As moms it's stressful on us, praying our lil baby is ok being away from us. I pray he gets a good report on the liver test. He's so young to be sick.
