My 18 month old yorkie poo has parvo

My roommates went to a friends house last Saturday and didn't know their dog was sick, Wednesday the dog had died and told my friends it was parvo I didn't think anything of it until Friday morning when Hadlee started trying to throw up around 2pm and then my friend suggested it may be parvo so I tried to give her some lunch meat and water and she wouldn't take it. We called and made an appointment for early the next day and gave Hadlee some Gatorade. We left for walmart to buy some rice cereal we could try and feed her when we got back she rolled over in her cage and acted like her normal self wanting someone to rub her belly and pet her she even ate some lunch meat for us. Later that night she seemed to be fine her appetite didn't increase but she was walking trying to play and even went outside to pee and poop (solid), then around 6am Saturday she started dry heaving in bed so I got up and got ready to take her to the vet when we arrived Hadlee seemed fine she was trying to growl at this lady she didn't know that was too close to me trying to protect me. In the examine room I asked for a parvo test and told them what happened she did the exam and looked over Hadlee said her heart sounded fine that her tummy was growling and that she didn't seem to be dehydrated she took the text and said it would take 12 mins she came in 8 mins later and said it was positive for parvo of course it broke my heart I cried and had a hard time giving her to the vet keep in mind she's been glued to my side for 16months and I love her more than words can explain but I've never been without her by my side, but I guess the real reason I'm posting this is to know if anyone has had anything similar to this happen to them and have it end on a happy note because the alternative is breaking my heart at the moment and I'd appreciate all the prayers you can send Hadlee's way!!! I'm really so sorry. My heart goes out to you. I haven't personally experienced this, but I've read of several pups getting well who had Parvovirus. Your home, clothes, and everything outside needs to be disinfected. Virkon S is what is needed to kill the virus in your home.

How is your pup today? From your post is sounds like you were on top of everything by getting your pup to the vet asap. That is one of the most important things you could have done to better the chances of survival. Not sure if you have researched parvo or not but I'm hoping you have because it's so deadly and can remain on just about everything including your yard. If your pup was keeping food down and had normal stools then it sounds like you caught it before your pup had a chance to start dehydrating. That's a good thing but vet care and watching them closely is still a necessity not to mention sanitizing your home, clothes, yard... Dogs with parvo can be fine one minute and then start showing more symptoms the next minute even after they've already been seen by a vet. The most important thing to do is to keep them from dehydrating. In addition to Vikron (not sure if I spelled it right) you can use bleach and water and also spray your home with Lysol. You should do this regardless as Parvo can live for several years. I am praying that your pup is ok today. Keep us posted!

I'm so sorry. I hope I'm not being insensitive, but I was wondering if she had had her shots, I thought if you had the shots, you didn't get parvo, can you get it anyway? Did you ask the vet about this? Hope she recovers fast, and I'm praying for you.

Parvo is definately deadly and easily spread. In my years as a vet tech we saw many pups with Parvo....it sounds hopeful since you got her to the vet before most of the usual symptoms were there....hydration is a big factor. I hope things turn out well for your fur baby! It was a big plus you were quick to take her and ask them to do the Parvo test....without the symptoms they may have sent you home with her and she could have gotten sicker! Make sure your friends know that they should not have any dogs or pups in their home....Parvo hangs around in surfaces and yards for a long time. Be sure you ask what you should use to sanitize your own yard and home!

Also...with our new pup I don't allow shoes in the house....it can be carried in on the bottom of shoes just by walking through an area infected with Parvo.

My 2lb yorkie got parvo at 15 months and she had all her shots. The vet said they can still get it even if they have had their shots. They usually get a milder case. My tiny 15 month old lived. The older they are the better the odds and 18 months is on the older side for parvo. Usually it is seen in puppies from 6-20 weeks. Good luck

There are two here that I know of that have had a good out come with parvo. MichelleM has a little male that had parvo as a pup. He is the daddy to my Tilly. The other is Kendra her little boy survived parvo as well.
I hope that your little one will be ok.

I'm sorry to hear about Hadlee, when we were stationed at Fort Knox, or neighbors had two rotties that were barely 2 months old. They bitty died the same day. The dam was hospitalized because they just knew she had it as well. She was in the vet hospital for over a week and then died herself. It was heartbreaking. My question was why not vaccinate?

The Parvo immunization shot will not always keep them from getting parvo. I don't think that the OP said that her pup had not had the shot.
