| 5 month old yorkie eats 1 coffee bean Hi All, Wish my first post could be under calmer circumstances. My little yorkie puppy (4 lb) got a hold of a single coffee bean. I was reloading the bean hopper on my coffee machine and when I tore the bag of roasted beans open it went all over the kitchen. Before I could comprehend what was happening she ran up and got a bean and I heard her bite into it. I chased her and managed to grab her and fish about half the bean ou her mouth but I think she's swallowed the other half. Do I need to go to the vet? This was <1 hour ago and there's no odd behaviour as yet. |

| Hopefully she didn't swallow the other half...they're so fast! Here's what to watch out for: Caffeine and Dogs, Caffeine and Cats - Caffeine Poisoning in Dogs

| I've been searching the internet and the information I have found suggest lethal dosage is 140 mg/kg of body weight. She weighs 1.8 KG and only ingested 1 bean. A single bean has on average approx 7 mg of caffeine -- so I think she'll be alright. |

| Please call your vet. Not sure how a pup would react to that much caffeine |

| 36 hours later -- everything is good. No change in behaviour or heart rate/breathing. |

| Happy to hear your little girl is doing well and not showing any adverse reactions. My father has dropped a couple of coffee beans and sent me into a panic. My dogs also find dangerous edibles on our walks like chocolate, candies, bones. I am not a great trainer, but I managed to teach my boys to "drop it" and "leave it". They understand other phrases and react to my fear, which is not advisable by trainers and inconsistent, but it works for us. The most important thing is not to inadvertently train to your pup to enjoy the chase when she gets her paws on something naughty. Max loves the chase. My boys have learned "you don't want that" or "that is bad for you" means leave it alone. Work on training and exchanging for acceptable things and it might help avoid an emergency in the future.
