| New and Health Question Hi, my name is Jeanne and I have just inherited my deceased Mother's little 11 year old Yorkie, Teenie. She was staying at the adult foster home where my Mother was and I believe all the residents there have given her a lot of food from their plates as well as my Mother had done. She has always been a very picky eater and normally waits till evening to eat. When I last saw her she weighed 4 pounds and in 9 months time she has gone down to 2 pounds. We just brought her home on Sunday. She has no front teeth and maybe a couple molars but yesterday she gustily ate 12-15 very small kibble (from a holistic pet store in town). During the weekend while I was in Oregon to pick her up she was eating Gerbers baby food sweet potatoes and also beef. I had cooked fresh chicken to take with me and she was eating a lot of that. During the weekend she was almost lunging for her food as though she hadn't eaten for days. She is drinking quite a bit of water and eliminating seems to be normal but this morning so far is refusing food. Teenie is weak and can only stand for a little bit and has only taken a few steps since being here. A friend of mine suggested that perhaps she has Cachexia. I believe she has been malnourished for quite a long time which might have contributed to some serious health issues. I don't know if I'm fighting a losing battle but I need a miracle and any advice I can get. I have not taken her to the vet because of her age. I feel that if she doesn't respond to nutrition and of course my undivided love & attention, I will have to do what will break my heart. Today I'm going to get a tube of Nutracal, some goats milk and a puppy food formula that is 50-60% fat, 30-50% and the remaining percentage to be carbs. Am I doing the right thing? I just know she needs the best nutrition possible. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me. I need it soon Jeanne |

| Hi and Welcome to YT! Sorry to hear of your Mother's passing... sending my Deepest Sympathies to you. I would get that baby to a vet, asap. 11 years old is not that old, she may have some type of generalized infection that a vet could treat and make her better quickly. If it's something worse, at least then you will know exactly what you can do for her, feeding and care wise. Sometimes bad teeth or even 1 tooth can cause them to stop eating. I would just ask the vet for his recommendations after a complete exam and bloodwork to determine the best path to follow for you both. Praying for you both!

YT 2000 Club Member | Bless you for loving Teenie and taking her in! I would most definitely take Teenie to the Vet. There can be many reasons that Teenie is not interested in eating and until a Vet diagnosises the reason, you may not be able to treat Teenie properly. Also, yorkies usually live years longer than eleven, therefore I really encourage you to take your precious little Teenie to the Vet. Welcome to YT!!

| Welcome to YT, my deepest condolence for the loss of your mother. You are a loving lady for taking your moms lil baby. 11 years old like others have posted is not to old for a vet visit. My last girl was 17 y/o when she had to be put down, that was this past Oct. Bad teeth can be cause for Teenie's picky and non eating. Dogs are good a hiding pain, not showing they are in pain. Only a vet can determine what is causing her to not eat. Please do not guesstimate what she may or may not have. Get professional help from a vet. If it is only a picky eating issue vet can give meds to perk up her appetite. Teenie may have many years ahead of her for a happy, healthy life, please give her that chance. Please have a vet check her out. Good luck and please keep us up-dated.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | My condolences for the loss of your Mother -- and bless your heart for taking in Teenie. Please, do get her to a vet ASAP - it's really essential since she is both weak and is refusing some food. Also, she seriously needs a thorough checkup and blood work profile so you have that baseline. 11 yrs old in a yorkie is actually quite young - and they should still be thriving, energetic, alert, and strong at that age - barring any health issues. Do mention to the vet about the excess hunger and excess drinking you saw - and ask if it's possible she has Cushings.
