| dog throwing up for 3 weeks now...any advice?! So my dog is 1 year and 3 months. She started throwing up about 2 & a half to 3 weeks ago. She throws up everyday only once. It's never at a specific time, it is just any random time throughout the day. I took her to the vet about 2 weeks ago and she put her on the I/d canned food. (the bland diet). That didn't help. I went back about 5 days later and the vet suggested x-rays and gave me Pepcid ac to give her. The whole 10 days she was taking Pepcid ac she only threw up once so that seemed to help a lot. The x-rays came back and the vet thought she saw something but wanted a second opinion so she sent me to an animal hospital so they could review the x-rays. The vet at the animal hospital said everything looked fine (just possibly a little cat litter which is has eaten before. NOT the clumping kind). So they said I guess she cured herself since she has not thrown up in about 10 days and there should be no problem. Well, right after that appointment she went back to throwing up everyday once a day. Her appetite is fine, she loves to eat. She has tons of energy and never looks upset or like she doesn't feel well. ANYONE have any ideas?! I did notice she has scabs I always find I mentioned that to the vet but she brushed it off as allergies. OH, and she was tested for parasites and it came back negative. Anyone with a similar experience please help! |

| I think I would seek out a specialist. This certainly is not normal. Have you made a change in her diet that maybe caused this?

| You might try giving your dog some pepsid. DeeDee had a similar problem but the vet put her on acid reducer which worked!!

| Oh, sorry, I see your vet suggested the same thing. DeeDee stayed on it for quite awhile.

| Did they do blood work? Have they done allergy testing? If she is allergic to ingredients in food vomiting can continue even once on I/D or other food for weeks. I would ask for more tests to be done, it could be something serious they are missing.

| What is she throwing up? Food, water? You say at random times but is it after she eats or drinks? Throwing up is never normal and doing it daily is concerning.

| It could be related or perhaps not, but I would have bile acid testing done. Sometimes pups with liver shunt will have gi issues like this.

Not sure if I'm replying to this right...I'm new here! She is throwing up food. Whole pieces of food that seem to be undigested. She will throw up anytime during the day. I feed her at around 9:30am and she could throw up at 2:00pm, 4:00pm or anytime in between that. Almost never passed 5:00pm I noticed. Also, when she has thrown up before in the past she would gag a lot to get it out like normal but with this situation it just comes out not being forced. Not sure if it's regurgitating or not, or does that even matter, I don't know. | |

| It does matter. There is a difference between regurgitation and vomiting. Perhaps you should see an internal med specialist. You can find one at: American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine > Home

| If this vet is out of ideas, I'd get a second opinion with an internist as ladyjane recommended. Your dog is vomiting because something is wrong or he's getting into something he shouldn't with regularity. My Tibbe had had an iffy tummy for a year or so, occasionally spit up bile, refused to eat for half up to a whole day, just lay about those days and it turns out, had MVD and went undiagnosed for quite some time until another member here - Ellie May/Crystal - who is studying to be a vet, told me that a dog can have liver pathology even though the routine liver studies done as part of the twice-yearly blood tests are all normal. So, I asked for a Bile Acids Test and it was positive. Further testing - a scintigraphy and abdominal sonogram - revealed Tibbe did not have liver shunt but he was diagnosed as MVD(microvascular dysplasia), a condition where the liver are portal vessels are underdeveloped and doesn't properly process toxins, handle proteins normally or properly clean the blood. Once his diet was changed to a hepatic diet, within a short time he stopped his vomiting and now only has the very occasional bout of nausea and is feisty and has all the Yorkie attitude he always had. I've read many places that dogs with MVD can live long, productive and fun lives once they have proper care.

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | I would definitely see an internist. Her throwing up is not good. Good luck and let us know what they say

| I would try a few things, take notes and see a specialists if concerns continued. First I would continue with the ID. If you are using dry, switch to wet. Smear the wet food on a plate so she has to slow down. Don't take her for a walk or let her play after eating. We have had this happen with our pup and all of this helped. Good luck. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | At this point, I'd seek out either an Internist or a GI specialist. It could be due to reflux since the pepcid seems to help, it could be due to something being wrong w/ her sphincter in her upper GI...or could be so many other things. Meanwhile though, I'd continue to use that pepcid every day.

| I see you are in NY, I am formally from NY, The ASPCA on 86th St. and East River Drive in Manhattan has excellent specialist of all degrees. I never had a need to go there, but know ppl that did, they had all good things to say about the care and treatment their dogs received. If a specialist is needed you can give them a call. Good luck,
