| My Yorkie's Diabetes Doesnt Seem to be Regulated My 8 yr old Yorkie, Winston was diagnosed with Diabetes and high enzymes in liver must 3 months ago. He's had 4 glucose curves, and his sugars were high in ea of them. (500-675) After 3 curves, vet still wouldnt increase his insulin, so I changed to a different vet. New vet just increased his insulin from 2 to 3 units on the last curve. Im giving him 2 injections a day; 3 meals a day; changed his diet from the hi-end merrick/blue/wellness canned to boneless, skinless chicken breast, mixed with sm amount of veggies, and sometimes grain or couple of spoons of canned merrick added. Everything he eats is very low fat now(below 8%). Even though he's on the insulin (Novalin N), he is still peeing all over the house, as he walks. He still drinks excessive water and he is always hungry. I cannot afford to keep doing Glucose Curves. He also has this horrible smell to his gas, all of the time. Has anyone had similar problems with their Yorkie? I worry that he may be eating too much protein(I may be confused about Keytones and odor), but if he eats more grain, his sugar will be higher and veggies will give him diarrea. Can anyone share their experiences... Oh, he has been going blind now, for last 2 weeks. Trying to do all the right things here. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I don't have experience w/ canine diabetes, but just wanted to welcome you to YT - glad you found us as you will find support and friendship here. I'm so sorry your kiddo is going through all of this. I hope our MauiGirl sees this as she went through a lot of this w/ her precious Meika. Hang in there. I'm going to move your thread to Sick and Injured so that it gets more attention .

| Winston is adorable. I'm sorry he is struggling with diabetes. As Wylie's Mom indicated, Maui Girl has experience with canine diabetes. My brother's cocker spaniel was diagnosed with it this year. She is being regulated with insulin and eats a prescription canned food from the vet. I am concerned that the diet you are feeding is not nutritionally balanced. Also, maybe Winston is not getting enough food? When I feed my dogs fresh food, I'm not sure of the amount to give them. A consult with vet nutritionist might be a good idea. This is likely not the whole answer to Winston's problems, but could help. Sending best wishes for your little boy.

| Hello Winny, welcome to Yorkie Talk. My Meika was diagnosed with diabetes in January, and I also fought to get her glucose regulated so I can understand your frustration. I will find the thread about that for reference, and will share what I can to help you. The dose Winston is on is quite small, maybe because of his weight. How much does he weigh? Meika was 15 lbs. and 5 yrs old. If I recall, Meika's glucose was 560, and they started her on 3 units twice a day. She almost immediately stopped the huge puddles of pee in the house, and I'm not sure how much she peed outside. The vet did the first curve, and increased her insulin one more unit; I got the tester and did subsequent curves every 10 days, and each time the vet increased insulin a little more. If I remember she was up to 7 units 2x/day, and glucose got better but not down near 100 where we wanted it. The vets told me they have to increase very slowly to let the body adjust, and that it often takes 6 months or more to regulate. So I was patiently waiting. Unfortunately, I lost Meika in March, due to poisoning by a toad. One thing I want to mention, is to ask your vet if Winston might also have Cushings. If there is a chance he does, then that would interfere with regulating his glucose. However since his dose is so low, they probably are not looking at that until later if he doesn't respond to increases. (FYI Meika had classic symptoms of Cushings; pot belly, panting, excessive thirst and urination; but we didn't test for that until trying more to regulate glucose). Good luck. I will try to find some of the info that might be helpful. I know it is frustrating wanting to help your pup. People who do get it under control can help them live a long full life. Many people don't even know they have it until they are blind from cataracts caused by diabetes. Hope Winston's eyes are ok.

| I did a lot of research on different foods, and for a while tried Wellness Core, grain free, low fat. I was a little worried about the higher protein though, because one one of my other Yorkies also eats the same, and has MVD which needs lower protein. What I liked much better was Nutrisca by Dogswell, which is grain free and uses chickpeas that have a lower glycemic effect. If you do a search about it you will find many people successfully using it for diabetic dogs. It isn't stocked at stores here, but I ordered from Amazon.com and had it shipped free. I made sure Meika got only green beans for treats, and mostly allowed no treats or between meal eating at all. By the way, much of what I read says that the food you feed them has only a very little effect on the diabetes. It is the timing that is important, and getting the insulin and food to cooperate at the same time, and last through the day, with feedings about 12 hrs apart.

| Ok Winny, in case you are interested in my frustrating journey in trying to regulate Meika's glucose, here is the thread http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...-diabetes.html It is a long one, and so frustrating. Sadly, as I said, just when I felt we were making progress, I lost my girl to something else.

| I know a lot of people have had success with feeding low carb. & grain-free diets in controlling their pets diabetes. Some are no longer even diabetic with dietary changes and weight loss. This seems to be the most true with cats. I don't know why though.
