| Mija is acting strange and not herself...I am worried! I have a little baby named Mija (pronounced Me-ha). She will be 2 on Sunday, May 25, 2014. My husband and I were watching my daughter's puppy (a doberman) while she finished her junior year at college. While we had the doberman, Mija became extremely attached to her, "Dash", and shared her bed, her toys, her kennel...everything. Dash went to get her ears clipped and did not make it through the surgery. Mija has been depressed ever since. She is not eating, hardly drinking water, won't play with her toys, run, or bark as she once did. All she does is follow my husband or myself around, step for step. I took her to the vet and she was put on anti-depressant to help her. My poor baby has lost 1/2 pound in 6 weeks. We have changed her food, washed all toys, bedding, etc., even bought new stuff for her, but still she won't have anything to do with any of it. The vet said to give her yogurt with probiotics, but I heard Yorkies are not to have human food at all. I am so confused. Mija is listless, when she sits down, she immediately moves as if she isn't comfortable. When she does finally get comfortable, she goes limp and gets into some of the most uncomfortable positions, her eyes roll and I have to move her with force to get her to snap out of it. Vet says she is just depressed, give the medicine time to work. Well, she is on day 2 of the meds and she is even more lethargic and has no energy at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am thinking of taking her to another vet for a second opinion. Have any of you all experienced this with your baby? |

| Her symptoms sound pretty scary. My Max (14 at the time) became depressed when Charlie (his best bud for 6 years) died. He lost some weight and was much less active, but he did not have those symptoms. What you are describing would terrify me. Feeding her yogurt will not hurt her. I would definitely take her back to the vet. Is there a chance she has hypoglycemia?

| So sorry for the loss of your DD's Dobe. How sad. Are there any other dogs you can visit with her? Some pups do get depressed and very much so. Maybe a trip to Petsmart or Petco where she can see some other dogs would make her feel a little better.

| This does sound very concerning. What additional tests did the vet do? Did he check her fecal sample or run a blood test? Did he recommend the yogurt and probiotic for additional symptoms she was experiencing or to balance out the new medication? How old is your sweet little girl?

| Thank you for all the replies. I apologize for not replying sooner. It was a very worrisome weekend with Mija. I ended up taking her to another vet for a second opinion. This vet wants to take blood and do a screening panel, but can't get it done until tomorrow due to the Memorial weekend. He said she is too little to take blood and have an abnormal test result come back after having the blood sit until Wednesday. My daughter came to visit and brought her new puppy with her (another Dobe named Xyrah Nicole Attiestar). Mija was excited and energetic for about 20 minutes. For a short time the playful Mija was back!! Then she started doing all her swaying, being lethargic, tripping, and she even started falling off the couch. Even when we held her, she would sway and her head would bob. She barely ate any food, and we ended up giving her water by syringe. She did eat one serving of wet food with the yogurt, but then she turned her nose up to it. Yesterday she did eat a bit of her wet food and began drinking on her own. I called the vet and he said to continue what I was doing and bring her in on Wednesday. I thought maybe she is hypoglycemic and gave her a bit of corn syrup (as that was all I had on hand) but it didn't help too much. I know it takes time and will continue to do as I have until tomorrow at 9:00. My daughter says I need to stop reading on what may be wrong with Mija and just let the vet diagnose. But if I don't read on what may be wrong then I won't know what pertinent questions to ask. |

| Thanks for the update. I am praying that you soon get to the bottom of this. I would probably take her for a second opinion as you suggested in your first post. From what you've stated, it sounds like your vet is not listening to your concerns. Maybe I'm spoiled, but if I described those symptoms (lethargic, head bobbing, falling) to my vet, he would tell me to get my pup there that day. Praying that all turns out ok.

| If she has another episode before your vet visit, can you catch it on video to show to the vet?

| Owned by Jezebel, yes we have captured it on video to show the vet. I will have it with me tomorrow for him to see. If that doesn't get me an answer and some satisfaction that the vet is actually listening to me, then I will go and find another vet....even if I have to drive an hour or so away to get to a good and reliable vet. |

| Im glad your getting bloodwork some of the symptoms sound like liver shunt but it could be something else too. I would ask for a bile acid test to test liver function

| Maggie was on Prozac for about three days and stopped eating, not one bite. Not eating is a negative side effect of the drug, same thing happened when she was put on Paxil. I took her off of the meds after three days or less, if Maggie doesn't eat, something is wrong. I had her bile acids tested, they were off the page. She doesn't have the head bobbing or falling although the internist told me to look for those signs. I would have her bile acids tested. I hope your little one is going to be ok.

| Update on Mija Hello all, My H decided at the last minute that he was going to take Mija to her appointment today. I feel lost as I wasn't there, but we both can't afford to take off and his job is more flexible than mine. It does, however, make me feel like a bad mommy for not being there with my baby. I do know, that my H is just as capable of asking the questions, and I had a list of questions, so he should do fine. My H just called and let me know that the vet has put Mija on an antibiotic as a just in case measure. They drew blood and are running a panel and we will know the results tomorrow. We have taken her off the anti-d med, only gave it to her for 3 days and didn't like the effects it was having on her. I just asked my H if they were running bile acid test and he said he would call and check. Mija has lost weight since Saturday...from 3.8 to 3.77. I know it doesn't seem like much, but she is getting so skinny!! I am not happy about her continual weight loss and we are trying everything that we can think of to keep her weight maintained, if not raised!! I will keep updating as I know what is going on. All prayers are welcome. |
