| Great News for Scratching Allergies/Colitis link I just received the best news from my Vet. My yorkie has suffered from seasonal, environmental scratching immediately after the scratching starts, the vomiting and diarrhea (colitis) starts. His diet consisted of cooked chicken and or salmon with sweet potatoes and lentils but the dog was and has always been a constipated dog.....which aggravates colitis. Anyway, I noticed this trend of season scratching and then the colitis would kick in. This past weekend was a nightmare with colitis. I took him to the Vet this morning and the Vet said it was not a food allergy and he had good news for a change. For the past 5 years, there had been study's that had isolated a certain isotope that caused the brain to say scratch and this isotope caused the scratching that irritated the digestive tract and then the vomiting and diarrhea would start. This drug is in the Vet's office now. He told me that 4 weeks ago, they started 4 different dogs on this drug that had Cushings Disease had been on Prednisone, etc. and after 4 days of daily usage of this new drug, the dogs have quit scratching. This miracle drug is unlike Prednisone as it does not have any side affects nor damages any internal organs. He said in a case like mine, where the scratching begins prior to Spring, we could start this daily regime as a preventive measure just to get through the Spring and Summer. He said for a yorkie my size, the drug would cost around $20/month. He too had noticed several patients that started with the itching and then it turned into colitis and then after the colitis was cleared up, the scratching would start again and then came the colitis back. I have not agreed to it yet, but am considering beginning my yorkie on it soon. $20/month is much less than a trip to the Vets office for colitis several times and would make for a much happier yorkie. I also gave my yorkie cooked, frozen green beans (pureed) the other day to help with the constipation. It worked really well to unblock his impaction. Be careful with how much you give though. 1/4 teas should be enough. I am excited about this new drug. |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I think you might be talking about Apoquel. I have just started Alfie on this last week, we had been waiting for it to be released here in UK since way last year. So far he has not been fully weaned off the prednisone but will be by midweek I have seen a real difference already. Good luck, hope it works out for you.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | What drug are you talking about here? It would help to know this. Also, what do you mean about Cushings dogs on prednisone? You would never put a Cushings dog on pred as their cortisol is *already* elevated and pred would exacerbate this; you want to do the opposite w/ Cushings dog. So I found that part very confusing.
