| Eclampsia after c section? Hi everyone, I'm new here. I'm 19 and I'm not a breeder (as if that is to explain my lack of knowledge on the subject) , but my 1 year old 5.6 lb yorkie accidentally got pregnant while visiting my great grandmother. (after I was told by the breeder I got her from that she couldn't get pregnant) Surprise! Anyways, after constant talks with my Vet, and reading posts on here. I knew a c section would be the only option for birthing her single (over due and quite large) female chorkie puppy. Every since coming home (on Jan 28th). I noticed that mommy would pant at night. The vet didn't think anything of it at the time( I called the next morning..twice. Yes. I'm one of those people ). But Its been getting worse, to where she would leave her nesting box to walk around, jump on my bed, and do an awful lot of panting. It's too early to call my Vet. (the offices aren't open until 8 am) and I am particularly worried at this strange behavior. I followed the advice given to another yorkie mommy and gave my baby half of a tums. She hasn't been panting or anything since. But, from your experience...What are the chances I'd have to take her into the vets offices today? And, is there a higher chance of eclampsia in c sections as opposed to natural whelping? ( if so, why?) |

| She can still develop eclampsia, but c-section and free whelping carry the same chances. The risks of eclampsia increase with larger litters. There's a lot of hormones going on. Does she pant all the time or only when feeding the pup? Nursing causes the uterus to contract, and she may be uncomfortable. Or she may just be hot. We had a heater for our pups and mom would get too warm. She would get out of the box and lay on the tile floor. Also, is she on pain meds? My momma dog took pain meds for 2 days after her c-section. She also did a lot of panting at night.

I've seen her pant once or twice while feeding, but usually only at night. She has gotten hot, so I sometimes turn the heating pad off and let baby snuggle up to her while Mommy licks on an ice cube. I originally thought it was just because she's hot, until she started digging and burying herself under covers. Also, he didn't send her home with any pain meds. Just antibiotics. | |

| Oh, also, I can't get her to eat any of the puppy food the vet recommended. She ate it up until having her baby. Now these past few days, I'm lucky if she eats the beef I fix her. |

| I don't want to take away from the topic at hand because it is important that you make sure your pup is ok. Personally, with so many questions, I would be at the vet getting her checked out. As to your story, I do have to make some comments. I don't know how old she was when you got her, but if the breeder said she could not get pregnant, are you saying she said she was spayed? If so, I would be at her doorstep looking for money for that c-section. The other thing I totally do not get from your post is why no one noticed she was in heat. I will say a prayer for your yorkie...I hope all is well. I don't breed so I have nothing to offer regarding your questions other than to speak with the vet.

| I'd be on the phone or at the vet's office. A quick blood test will tell if she needs a calcium supplement. If she's not eating, something is wrong. Maybe a change of Antibiotics or pain meds. Best to have a vet look at her.

| This requires a follow up visit to the vet. I did not see (my eyes are not focusing well this am!!) any reference to pain medicine....is she getting pain medicine? I would be going to another vet if this vet did not give her pain meds to take post op. She SOUNDS like that could be an issue with her, but panting and restlessness can be symptomatic of many issues. Please have her seen by a vet. |

Yes, I got her believing she was spayed. At least, that's what I assumed when she said "Now, she does not have the capabilities to get pregnant, so at least you don't have to worry about that" My dad's ex gf was a breeder and she gave me the yorkie as a gift. We have since moved from that state and I have no clue where she lives. No, I absolutely did not notice she was in heat. The vet said it was probably her first one. There was no blood. I didn't notice swelling until after she became pregnant. I do feel guilty for not paying close attention to her. It was the holidays and we were guests in someone else's home. So I felt the need to help cook, clean. And so forth. So yes, she was in heat, and no. I did not realize. Thank you for your prayers, she has a vet appointment at 2.

We have been going to this Vet since I moved here. And no, he did not give her any pain meds. Just antibiotics. Which I thought was really odd seeing as in she was obviously in pain. I asked him while on the phone today, exactly why. He said he did not want to compromise her ability to take care of the pup. And that internal stitches aren't as sore for them as the ones that need to be removed in two weeks. He also sent her home bloody, like on her paws, stomach, tail. Is that normal after a c section?

Back from the vets office. He said she had early signs of eclampsia and had us buy a supplement called nutri-cal. I'm to feed her a teaspoon a day. I can give her yogurt (which I bought) and ice cream. Also, he said I should wean the puppy and bottle feed. But my grandmother does not think I should wean her if she's on calcium supplement. Her milk is coming in good enough, I feel. And when I went to the feed store to buy a bottle for Sybil, we met a couple of english bull breeders who told me I should absolutely not wean a 3 day old puppy. So I'm torn on who to listen to. The vet, or the experienced breeders (and gma)? Sorry for so many questions, btw. I just want to know as much as I can and can't think of a more knowledgeable group than the members of yorkie talk.

One more thing. Do you think I should maybe switch vets since he wouldn't give her pain meds? She seems fine now, but the day of. She was terrified. It really pisses me off in the condition he sent my baby home and I wasn't afraid to tell the nurse so. My grandmother thought nothing of it though and I don't agree.
