| Weight loss/Big Appetite and peeing a lot!!Not sure if he's sick So....Prince might be sick again. We weaned him off all of his meds for his heart and gall bladder over the last few months and he has been doing great with the episodes he was having last year at this time. Since we took him off his meds, his appetite has skyrocketed. He wakes me up at night to eat...and he's also peeing like crazy...unfortunately, sometimes he does it in the house. He's also started loosing weight. He's not overly skinny...yet. Here's my thing....I don't know if he's sick or not. He could be loosing weight because I changed him to a Senior food, which has less calories...but he's definitely lost weight within the last month since we took him off the ursidiol. He's always peed a lot, but the peeing in the house started this winter when Ricky started peeing in the house(on pee pads)...so maybe Prince is confused about where to pee...and his increase in appetite could be because he's not on all of the meds he was on. Perhaps they were killing his appetite and now he feel good enough to eat. He also has more congestion...which I am hoping is just allergies and not pneumonia. Anyways...I am worried about kidney issues and possible diabetes...I don't think he has pneumonia, but I am a bit worried about that with his congestion. We have an appointment tomorrow morning at the vets where he will be getting full blood work up and a wellness check, at the minimum. I am wondering if I am on the right track in my thinking that it might be kidney's or diabetes. I know that often, a yorkie doesn't just have one abdominal issue. They seem to have a trifecta of issues...gallbladder, pancreas, kidney and liver issues combined. I am also wondering if I should ask for test other than the normal bloodwork that will include a glucose test. |

| I don't have any advice because my knowledge in these areas is very limited, but I wanted to offer my prayers for Prince.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am sorry Prince is having some issues. The vet should be able to find out if it's health related or not. My pom had cushing's and she had an enormous appetite, thirsty all the time, loss of hair on both sides and tail and weight loss she also had a pot belly. I am dealing with my Pixie having kidney and high blood pressure issues. Her main symptoms were hungry all the time and depressed. I didn't think she was as sick as she seems to be. So it's best to get them checked out.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | You should get a full blood panel for this kiddo, but most importantly should be checked for diabetes, Cushings, and thyroid levels. Are there any other random symptoms...like hair loss, back leg muscle wasting, pot belly shape, "old" look to the face/eyes, recurrent skin/ear infections...anything random?

| I agree...needs a full blood panel done for starters. Why did they take him off his meds?

| The specialist took Prince off his heart meds because the Dr who put him on them to begin with misdiagnosed his CHF. After doing an US and a follow up xray, she found that he has a grade 1 heart murmur but his valves are fine and his heart really isn't enlarged. She put him on ursidiol because she also did an abdominal US and found he had sludge in his gallbladder. But after it cleared up and there were no more flare ups, she weaned him off it. We just got back from the vet and as suspected, Prince had went from 8.6 lbs down to 7.4 lbs. We did a urinalysis and a comprehensive 20 panel blood test that includes his blood glucose. She also put him on clavamox. She suspects that he may have a UTI as well, but she said he could use the clavamox anyways because he's got such a terrible mouth. He hasn't had his teeth cleaned since 4/2012 because of all of his health issues. The specialist did not want to risk putting him under...and we were supposed to be talking about getting his teeth done this spring, but who knows now with all of this new stuff going on. Anyways...we will know more on Monday when the results come back. It seems like the vet is leaning towards diabetes though BTW....he's an older dog, but yes, he does seem to have an older look to his face and it seems like he doesn't have as much hair on the bridge of his nose and around his eyes...and it's thin on his neck underneath his collar. His eyes are also much more cloudy looking than Ricky's are. You can't notice it as much during the day, but at night, they look... I thought more shiny, but now I know it's cloudy that I am seeing. I always just thought they had a different eye color or something until the vet pointed it out today. Last edited by theporkieyorkie; 01-25-2014 at 10:54 AM. |

| What health issues would prevent a dental? Sounds to me like the health issues have been changed...in other words, not a problem The infection from his teeth certainly are not good for his heart, not to mention his kidneys. I totally understand being worried about doing a dental as I have had to make such decisions on my senior pups. I have one who I felt was never going to have another one and now I am so glad I did it. That was my George .. here is his thread about his recent dental. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ds-dental.html If you can afford to do a dental with a specialist, I highly recommend a consult with one. My vet did not want to do a dental on George either. Keep us posted on the lab work. With diabetes if he has it, I would think that would be another reason to avoid any infection such as in the mouth. Prayers for Prince...

| You are on the right track doing blood work and I hope the results and diagnosis come quickly, and treatment can begin. I've spent 6 days of testing & waiting with my Meika (5 yrs old), who has similar symptoms except hair loss. While looking primarily at Cushings, it turns out that she has diabetes. Her glucose is 558 with normal being 70-138. We started her on insulin today, and will explore further testing for Cushings in the future, as some dogs have both. I'll start her own thread, and will follow yours closely. Hope for the best for both of our pupsters.

| So sorry to hear about Meika!! Thank you for giving me the link to your thread Lady Jane!! I've been thinking about taking Prince to a dental specialist instead of having a regular vet do his teeth. Depending on what we find out on Monday, that may the next mountain we conquer. I talked to my mom last night and she had a diabetic cat that only lived 3 months after she was diagnosed. She said that it's a lot harder to control in animals than it is in humans if they don't eat the same time and same amount every day. Prince can be a fussy eater so getting him to eat the same amount at the same time every day is going to be a huge challenge. |

| I feel your frustration in waiting for lab results. It is such a stressful time not knowing what is wrong and not being able to try to fix it... YET. Soon you will have answers and can take action. BTW my neighbors cat also had diabetes, and with proper managing of glucose lived to be 17. Diabetes is not a death sentence, but is a call for proper management to minimize damage and have as long of a life as possible. I am reading tons of info online, and am dedicated to proper management for my baby. I've given Meika her insulin shots for 2 days, and it is going just fine. She doesn't even notice when I give the shots. She lost 1 lb. in just 5 days.... but not to worry, she is a chunky 15 pounder who loves to eat. (she is 3/4 Yorkie and 1/4 Maltese). I don't know how old Prince is, but apparently he has other health issues. Good luck with all of those, you will be in my thoughts and prayers.

| UPDATE: Bloodwork came back today and the vet actually said Prince has low blood sugar, not high blood sugar. We are heading back in shortly to do a glucose test in the office to confirm the findings. She said he could have a pancreatic tumor that's causing it and that there's medicine for it. We just did an abdominal ultrasound last May...so it would definitely have come on quick. I am just scared and nervous and upset. I know that the breeder I got him from had dogs dying at 7 and 8 from cancer. I hope my little guy has more longevity than them. |

| When I read increased appetite, hair thinning, low blood sugar, I remembered Crystal (EllieMay) mention that it can be Cushing's. Cushing’s Disease Summary Stress will increase the level of this hormone in the bloodstream. This includes surgery, infection, fever, and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

| Sending good thoughts and prayers for Prince today. I know how frustrating it is to wait for diagnosis, and hope you find answers soon. Good to know it is not diabetes. As many have mentioned, look at Cushings. It is common in Yorkies, often in older dogs, it is one of the most under-diagnosed and misdiagnosed diseases, and while not curable it is treatable.
