| Safe over-the-counter topical anti-itch treatment? Greetings, it's my first post. I'm starting to take a more active role caring for my girlfriend's Yorkies and I'm hoping you can help me make a list of some safe over-the-counter home treatments. I'm all for taking them to the vet or pet hospital when the need arises, but there's a lot that can be done at home for little everyday comforts. Does anyone know of good home remedies to stop the itchy-scratchies? Hercules has some redness (skin's not broken thank goodness) on his tummy where he's still nipping and scratching. Are there safe topicals for anti-itch? anbesol? hydrocortisone? essential oils? hydrating cream? Tomlyn Allercaine? other? Thanks for your help. Last edited by Rockin Mike; 12-10-2013 at 10:20 AM. |

| Laddy has allergies the best thing we have found for him is to bathe him twice a week and after rinsing well mix half vinegar and half water poor it on him and leave it. He smells like a pickle until dry but after dry the smell fades. We also use GNC Medicated Conditioner on him that you can buy at the pet store.

| Teddy has had itchies recently and the vinegar/water mix after shampooing helped him. We follow with conditioner. I would not use any of the topicals you listed. You run the risk of your dog licking these things and becoming very sick. I would also want to know the cause of the itching. The cause can be something benign like dry skin or use of the wrong hair products, poor food choice with inadequate nutrition. Or it could be allergies, moderate to severe. Worst case scenario, it is the sign of an underlying health problem.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and WELCOME to YT ! Glad you found us. Well, unfortunately, you have a breed who is very prone to allergies and/or the skin issues that go with it. If there are red patches on the tummy, there is a very, very good chance it's an infection called pyoderma - this is staph intermedius. The only way to get rid of it is via a prescription from your vet; the standard for treating pyoderma is Simplicef x 30days (yep, 30 days!). So, I'd take your kiddo to the vet and the vet can do a skin scraping, look at it under scope, and see if there is bacterial overgrowth. Is he itching only on his tummy? Does he chew or lick his paws? Checked for fleas?

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | I don't know of any topical over the counter meds that are safe for dogs. That doesn't mean that there aren't any. If you ask your vet they can tell you which ones are. I do know that Banderol allergy (oral) can help and you will need to ask your vet what the proper dose for your pup is and how often to give it.

| Btw: anbesol is for ORAL pain relief. Nothing to do with itching...
