Exclamation Puppy fell off bed

Hey everyone my names ally and I'm new here. I've come across your website because I've been looking up on broken limbs. I have a roughly 8 month old morkie named derpy who got hurt yesterday. She fell off the bed and whimpered my mom took her straight to the emergency vet where they told us (that ankle like part) of my dogs front paw broke. They put her in a splint cast and said surgery is recommended but if we decide not to get it she should heal perfectly fine, that the bone might heal not 100 percent straight but she won't be in pain and she'll be able to walk. We're away at the moment so it was an emergency vet we didn't trust and are going to take hers to ours when we get home but we still don't know if well be able to afore It as she just had surgery 3 months ago on her back leg because she was born with a hip joint defect. I want to know if anyone has delt with these things before? How much the surgery cost you? If you opted out and how it healed without the cast? What you did every day to take care of your puppy? And especially how you got them to go to the washroom as she is pad trained but can't put weight on her leg to do so. We held her on it supporting her leg but no go

So sorry...these little ones are so fragile.

If she broke the tiny bones in her ankle, there is only a 5% chance it will heal without surgery. I have had two vets tell me this and one was a boarded orthopedic surgeon.
I do not know about the paw, but I would think that might be difficult as well since the bones are so tiny and the blood flow is not so great.

The surgery is not cheap...I don't know about CA but here in Houston we would pay around $3,500 - $4,000 for such a surgery.

Good luck and please keep us posted.

I'd say get a second opinion, from your vet. But start looking for ways to save pay for surgery just in case.
Draco broke the same area and his little toes. They said we were extremely lucky because he could have needed surgery. On our first visit they put him a splint, so like a soft cast. Then told us to come back in a week to see how it was doing and make sure he wouldn't need surgery. He didn't need surgery and healed perfectly. Although he was around 3 1/2 months at the time, and the doctor said him being a young puppy had a lot to do with the healing process since he still had growing to do. The whole process I think ended up being a little over 900$ With the xrays, visit fees, pain medication, and going back every other week or so to have the splint taken off looking at his paw and then putting another on. Though I live in Los Angeles, and even here I'm sure the price could have differed by going to other vets. But I went one I trusted, not one that was just going to go the cheap route, nor one that made me feel like I was paying for unnecessary things.

As far as taking care of Draco, he was super hyper him hurting his paw didn't slow him down one bit. Which was actually the awful part because the vet wanted him to stay off the paw as much as possible and keep him very small space to limit movement. We got bully sticks and other chew toys to entertain him. Luckily had a friend visiting for the most part while he was healing so he was never left alone and she loves playing with him.

mine was in a cast and it did nothing. I ended up needing the surgery plus bone grafts because we waited due to the vets negligence. She broke the bones just above the paw. I will tell you if you decide to go the cast route you need to crate her and No walking for 5 weeks. I mean NONE. put her in a crate big enough for bed and pee pad and food. Take her out when you can hold her or put her in a secure stroller. Get some meds for when she is frantic from your vet to take the edge off. Its very hard but it passes.

Don't kick yourself at all....I have been told by two different vets that the chance of those bones healing without surgery is only 5% .. so it much be common knowledge. Even if you immobilized a pup totally, it has a terrible chance of healing and there really is no way to keep them that still anyway.
You are correct though...with a delay you are looking at bone grafting...more money and more pain for the pup.

I know you would think the vets would know the 5% chance of healing. I wasn't even given surgery as a choice. They just casted her up and sent us on our way. I was such an idiot for not checking into it more. When they took the cast off and said it didn't work and I was told to amputate by dumb vet I said no way and I sent the xrays to another vet. They were appalled they cast it. The other vet wanted me to report them. Good news is she runs around like a little nut all healed

Thanks to you...never call yourself an idiot. Far from it. You saved her leg! It is GREAT news that she is doing so well. You have a very important story now to share...thank you for doing that.

I'm so glad you went to another vet and that your little girl healed!

I have learned so much in this forum thanks to people sharing. I love our vet, but no doctor is perfect. Being informed through other people's experience can make such a difference.

I just bought insurance in case of this (Embrace). Good luck. I would go to a board certified ortho surgeon or at least a very experienced small dog ortho surgeon for a second opinion.
