| Nibblet Not Putting Weight On Hind Leg I don't know whether to keep her quiet and still, or to let her exercise a little bit. Nibblet had agility class yesterday (this is her third session), and at the end we did the steeplechase (I guess that's what it's called). She jumps the sticks that are adjusted to her height. I noticed last night after we were home that when she was running, she wasn't putting a lot of weight on her hind right leg. (This is from looking at her head on.) This has never happened before. She stands on it OK and walks on it OK, but when she runs, she's favoring her right hind leg. I'm keeping her in her crate today (which is actually her bed which is in the Master bath. She has her crate there, which is open, and she can get to her wee-wee pads) and keeping her still, but I don't know if I should let her walk, or what. She doesn't "walk" anywhere - she more like runs so fast that she's like a hovercraft at times. I'm thinking she just pulled something, and needs to rest it for a couple of days. She's not complaining or in pain, but she is favoring that leg. My poor baby! I haven't let her feet touch the ground (once I caught her from tearing around the house.). I even hand fed her. Bad mommie. |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Resting is good, but a vet visit is in order. You do need to find out if her knees are in good shape to do agility. Has she been previously assessed for LP?

| You need to have the vet check her out she may have Luxating Patella, something else or it could be a pulled muscle. If she has LP though jumping is not good for her to be doing so I really think you need to have a vet check it out.

You have to have those legs assessed...I would advise an ortho specialist....agility is very strenous on muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints. I LOVE the name!!! Last edited by Yorkiemom1; 10-14-2013 at 04:55 PM. | |

| Update on Nibblet - She has LP OK; I finally got my password so I can give you an update. I kept Nibblet off her feet for a week. She used her wee-wee pad, I carried her everywhere, I hand fed her (she's up to 4 pounds! She's usually 2.3/4). We went to the beach and she walked a little on flat sand, but I carried her most of the time because I didn't want her to strain her leg. No agility class this week. I walked her today, and I noticed when we got halfway through our walk that she was favoring her leg (even though she wanted to run- and did till I stopped her). SO... We went to the vet and it looks like she has LP on the leg she was favoring. This is the first time she's ever had this problem, and she's 2 years old. She's been in agility/click a trick classes since she finished puppy class, and she loves it. But for now we're going to have to stop. The vet said we could do surgery, or wait and see how she is with the Rimadyl. So she's on that (.25 pill twice a day for six days). No stairs or jumping or running (which means no chasing the cats and making them her chew toys). So that's where we are. I'd rather not do the surgery, and if the Rimadyl works, that's the route I'm taking. She's not in pain, and it's probably just the inflamation. But if she's still favoring it, we'll have to have the surgery. I just get SO nervous about putting her under because she's so tiny. So keep your fingers crossed for no surgery!! |
