YT Addict | Herniated disc? So again Lolli wakes us up with a scare this morning. She was trying to walk to my mom who usually walks her in early AM and just collapsed. I had been awake already so I actually saw how it happened. Her rear end just.. gave in. So naturally we took her to the vet ASAP, but I had thought it was to do with patella since we knew she's had it but just has been lucky enough to not have any symptoms just yet (albeit being a stage 3 out of 4). But nope.. the vet looks at her and he's like you know strangely enough, the way she's walking doesn't seem like patella. So he does some tests with her legs and feet (I got to watch) and he palpates some of her back areas for which he explains was to see if she'd react from maybe a pinched nerve would give a jolt and whatever else he said medically that I was more or less just staring at him like but basically he said he really believes right now it's a herniated disc. We could do x-rays but the first course of action probably would not change regardless of what it shows; steroid and muscle relaxer and a low dose pain med for when/if she shows discomfort/pain. So we did that, we skipped the x-ray for now. I know this sounds terrible but it was not even a month ago we paid $400 and we agreed that if this regimen doesn't help her to improve that we would then proceed with an x-ray (they need to sedate her for it and all that shabang). She is walking but she just seems like its unstable back there. She's pottying fine and everything, ears are alert, tail is up when she does walk, but she doesn't really like to be walking. So I just wanted to know, has anyone else had their baby get a herniated disc and does it seem similar to what happened with us?

YT Addict | Sorry for double post, I just wanted to followup and reiterate what the vet actually prescribed her. He gave her a steroid injection in her rump muscle, I forget what kind. But she had this before about 3 weeks ago to help with her anal gland issue. Anyway, so we have prednisone to give her daily for 5 days then every other day for 5 days then 1/2 tablet every other day for 5 days. The whole time she's on prednisone she's to be on rest and not to walk up or down the stairs so we will have to carry her since I'm on a third floor apt and no going up or down onto furniture. She never really gets on furniture except in the mornings, but the 3 flights of steps is what concerns me. I've never seen her twist or turn wrong on them but I hunch about maybe that with her patella sometimes giving her knee an issue that she didn't twist somehow wrong getting up or off the couch (it's actually really low to the ground but I know that allowing her to begin with was idiotic of me, I'm kicking myself!!). She's also got a low dose Tramadol for if we notice any discomfort or pain. She's never yelped or whimpered at all. She seems to be ok with "trying" to walk and she does walk, it just seems like the nerves are preventing her but not really giving pain. But I do know that doggies don't really show pain much unless it's really, really bad. They said it's my judgment on when to give her Tramadol. I'm wondering if I should give her some just to be on the safe side?

| I'm sorry this didn't get answered. There is a thread soewhere around here about my Yorkie and back problems. Yes, I'd give the Tramadol. Gabapentin is a good drug when nerve pain is present. They can xray without sedation, it just may not be as revealing. The thing about discs is that they don't really show up on xray. Depends on how messed up things are in there, the vet may or may not see the problem. So in cases where imaging is indicated, usually other methods are used (MRI, myelogram). Keeping her still is very important. This isn't uncommon, but that much nerve involvement isn't good. If you want to do everything possible to fix this then you'll need a neurologist.

YT Addict | Ellie that's what the vet said about the x-ray, that without sedation it can be less revealing especially if the dog doesn't want to cooperate and they don't always show up on x-rays anyway, just like you said. So far she's doing great. I am keeping her in her bed a lot (it's not that hard since she's usually sleeping around me anyway while I work at home on the computer every day for hours) and we don't let her go up or down the steps at my apartment building, we pick her up how the vet showed us that is supportive of upper and lower back, and we blocked off the slick floor of the kitchen (the rest of the house is carpet) so hopefully this will be enough. Oh yeah and we blocked off her ability to get up on the couch. I hope this will be enough for a while. I mean with her last vet visit being less than a month ago and now this time, we are over $500 in and that's about all the savings we had :/ I want to see about a neurologist in the future, and hope that the low activity will be OK for now. She doesn't really do a ton of jumping around but she does like to run a lot so I've been keeping her from doing that best to my ability. We got her on these Zoom soft chews the vet offers at their facility and I can't find much info online about it, other than 1 or 2 websites that I don't recognize doing a review, but nowhere can I find information about Rimoxen which is the anti-inflammatory ingredient in the Zoom chews, which are a joint supplement/multivitamin.
