| UTI & dissolving Struvite stones advice please Daisys been suffering from a UTI and struvite stones since the beginning of June. We took her to the vet and they put her on clavamox and a couple days later struvite stones started to come out. This continued throughout June and into the first week of July. Since Clavamox was removing them we didn't add anything else to help remove them since she has a super sensitive stomach (food intolerances/allergies) and has horrible flare ups of bloody diarrhea and vomiting. So by the middle/end of July I hadn't seen any more stones but every time I tried to lower the dose of clavamox the blood would return. So I decided to add crananimals cranberry powdered supplement within a week (beginning of August) the biggest stone yet came out. After a couple weeks I no longer was seeing stones, blood, and she was finally only getting up once at night to go potty. So once again I tried to lower the clavamox and the blood returned again. Ive kept her on the clavamox and cranberry supplement and haven't seen any more stones since the big one in August, but I still see blood in urine every time I try to lower the clavamox. I was thinking about adding Absorbic Acid and the vet recommended something that would also help acidify her urine but hes a little worried about her sensitive stomach on it. Does anyone have any advice or experience with dissolving these stones. She had a horrible bloody diarrhea and vomiting flare up two weeks ago and her belly is still recovering so I don't want to upset it even more by adding more stuff to dissolve this stupid stone. Right now shes on Tylan and Cerenia for her constant flare ups and clavamox and cranberry for the stone. Thanks! |

| Bladder and kidney stones are porous and bacteria living inside them are very safe from antibiotics. Of critical importance in treating struvite stones is an antibiotic sensitivity test of bacteria found in the dog's urine. Only in this way can we chose the proper antibiotic and the proper dose. The secret of success is to use the right antibiotic at a high enough dose for a long period of time. The antibiotic should be give for at least a month - better yet for one month after x-rays show no remaining stones. Occasionally, bacterial infection is due to some anatomical defect causing urine pooling within the kidneys, ureters or bladder where bacteria can live. These defects are quite rare. They are either inherited defects or caused by prior surgery such as spaying. A contrast dye x-ray would detect such defects. Such a study would most likely be done if standard treatments fail. struvitestones My vet mentioned the anatomical defect when Princess had UTI, I think it's worth investigating, for your pup. Was she spayed early? Cathy (701Barney) used Uroeze, you can ask your vet about it, I think it needs a prescription.

| Thanks ill ask about the uroeze. She was spayed at 7 months which was February 2011. This is the first uti that shes had and first time having bladder stones. Do you know if UTIs would have started at an early age if she had that? I was planning on bringing in another urine sample to make sure the antibiotics are still working for her. I also have been giving her distilled water and watering down her food. Shes been on a grain free food. |

| Princess was spayed when she was only 6 months old & she had a UTI not long after. Vet mentioned the anatomical defect & said we can do the dye if it occurs again. She has not had another UTI...but recently (she's 5 years old now), she had struvite crystals in her urine, but no bacteria or any sign of stones. The struvite crystals will form into stones if the pH is consistently on a higher alkaline level & it's almost always associated w/an infection. A healthy dog's pH is slightly acidic, @ 6-6.5. Struvites form @ higher alkaline pH @ 7.5-8 (this is where a human's should be). Since your little one has stones & a UTI, it needs to be cultured & an antibiotic sensitivity done to see which antibiotic will be most effective. It needs to be sent out to a lab & it costs around $150-200, depending where you are. Has an x-ray been done? Struvite stones can be easily seen on an x-ray. Is she on a prescription diet to help dissolve the stones? Some say a special diet is not needed since struvites can be dissolved. So what you're doing is good, 'Liquefying the diet' is key (learned this from Cathy too). Be very careful w/supplementing anything acidic like cranberry (long term) as it can cause oxalate stones which require surgery for removal. | She's on canine caviar venison due to a sensitive belly. She won't be able to handle the prescription diets to help dissolve stones. They sent out her stone to be analyzed which was about 200 dollars. No X-rays yet and the vet wanted to try clavamox first before during a urine culture since we have recently spent thousands on trying to diagnose the bloody diarrhea and vomiting. If I bring a urine sample in and they send it out that's going to cost me another 200 dollars? I feel horrible but I don't know if I can afford that at this time. |

This is from a take home 'type of tests' info that my vet gave me: Culture or Grow the organism in a special medium in the laboratory. After an organism is cultured, it can be examined and tested for sensitivity to antibiotic drugs. Small doses of various antibiotics are placed on the culture medium to help determine which one will be most effective against the disease producing organism.
