YorkieTalk Newbie! | Unending diarrhea...help! Our little Cooper is almost a year old, and has suffered from diarrhea for more than half of his life. After seeing three different vets, and going through months of metronidazole, we're unsure what to do. Food allergies and all bacteria tests are negative, so the vet thinks we might have to see a specialist for further testing. Questions: 1) Has anyone experienced a similar scenario? 2) What kind of budget are we looking at for a specialist? Thank you for your feedback!! |

| So sorry your little guy is going through this, it must be so stressful not knowing what's causing it. Could you describe the diarrhea? Is it watery? Is there mucus or blood? Here it describes where the problem can be coming from: Dog Diarrhea Treatments, Causes, and More I'm guessing the metronidazole was for possible giardia? How long was he on it? Sometimes the met/flagyl can cause diarrhea. In that case, a different antibiotic must be given. An appt w/a specialist varies, but in the long run, you'll actually be saving $ or it will be worth it bc a specialist can get to the bottom of the problem. It might be expensive, but going to different vets multiple x's w/no real answers can get more expensive, also frustrating.

| A friend of mine had this problem, and come to find out it was campy virus that her dog had picked up from staying with other Yorkies that had it. |

| Sounds like doggie IBS to me. I know when I took Zoey for her specialist appt. for CRF it was $250 just for the appt. with no testing done.

| Check the food label. Do you feed tinned food, especially Medi-Cal or some Hills. If any of the tinned contains liver, pork or any of the foods contain corn, wheat and sometimes rice they will cause intestinal issues. I know the ones that are specifically Gastro from the Vet you would think would be fine or good, they are not. I have been feeding mine the Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Bison, havent hardly had any trouble since. I do not feed chicken based food or lamb based they can't handle it. |

| I have a grooming client that found Natural Balance tinned Sweet Potato and Duck and it does not contain any liver or pork. Could be ok so far their Yorkie is fine on it. I don't tend to feed tinned food. |

| Sounds like it is time for a specialist as your vet suggested. It may cost a bit more up front, but in the long run you will save money. They just have a way of getting to the bottom of things. As for the cost, the specialist will go over everything with you and give you an estimate. I really like that about them....they typically will look at a range of things that it could be and tell you what tests need to be done. You can ask what the initial office visit will be, but it is usually around $150.

| My Pebbles had the same problem and she has been on a low maintenance dose of prednisone for over 7 years. If I try to take her off of it she goes back to having problems. It isn't the best scenario but it is the only one that has worked for her. Good luck and I will pray. |

| This may sound silly, but does he chew rawhide? Our little guy can't have them, they give him terrible diarrhea. We bought him one, then took it because of digestive problems, and it cleared up. It started again, and we were confused, until we realized he had found the stash that our previous dog had hid, and we didn't know about. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | The biggest question I have for you is - has he had any sort of disease/infection/sickness in his life up to now? Ie, did he have giardia or anything as a pup?
