| diarreha Hi all..... GiGi has had 4 bouts with small cases of diarrhea this summer. They last only one day because I give her chicken and rice and then she is back to normal poops. I am just wondering if this is something any of you have experienced. This is not normal for her and although she goes right back to normal I am concerned. This last time she had mucus in the loose stool and blood. I know they will get blood in the stool from the tushy straining to poop but that is kinda normal...I have never seen mucus in the loose stool although I have heard it is also common. She had blood work at her annual checkup and nothing was noted...hate to bring her in for more if it is not necessary...enough already with the needles. Any experienced advise is appreciated (before we make an appointment)... Thanks so much, Tina

| I took my Chihuahua to vets office a few months ago with the same symtoms and they said she was fine. They told me that stress could cause this. The only reason that she would be stressed is because of my new Yorkie and/or my grandson's Lab that I dog sit for every once in a while. She absolutely does not like them! Not sure if this is whats wrong with your baby but worth getting checked out.

| Maybe she is having a problem with her food. What are you feeding her?

| My dogs will often get mucus in stool when they have upset tummys...and my little guy has had a little blood from straining. My boys have very sensitive stomachs and it doesn't take much to rock the boat. Some of time, the cause of the upset tummy's has been from eating a food that doesn't agree...but a lot of times, it's due to stress...stress from a vet visit, a long car ride or a trip. I don't think I'd be as concerned with mucus as much as I would be with why it's happening. Is there anything you can correlate between all 4 times...a change in diet/food...something significant that happened that would cause stress or anxiety in past few days~a trip to the vets or groomers, a car ride, etc etc. I started keeping a journal of what happened and when, and it really helped me out. I recorded pretty much everything my dog had eaten within the day or two leading up to the diarrhea...any outings etc etc. He was having diarrhea fairly regularly though....like about once every week or two. | Every time we have a poop problem it's something he ate. We had problems on and off for a couple years. Sometimes it was treats but the last bout we had I was convinced it was his kibble (Innova). We gradually switched to Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier and things are looking great. I even use it as treats and he likes it. I also feed him a bit in the morning, leave the kibble out during the day and feed him again in the PM with a mix of Hills Prescription ID and kibble. It's been working well since April.

| Hi all..... Thanks for your answers. The only thing I can think of (and I just realized this about 3days ago) is that there was a vulture perching on my over head metal awning right outside my kitchen back door. I got wise to it this week and check regularly every day so that it finds a new home. It may have seen my 2 thru the kitchen window and decided to wait till it could get a chance at them. It would have had to go thru the glass screen door and the glass on the kitchen door so I don't think it would have been able to get in but glad I realized it was there. They are pretty small. I have been feeding both my Yorkies the same food for the past 4 or 5 years and my other Yorkie is not having any problem with it. But I will have to keep checking for how she is doing with it and see if anything else can be stressing her out. Right now she is on chicken and rice with a tiny bit of veggie. Thanks again.... Tina

| Have you talk to your vet about it? Sense it keeps happening I would let the vet know and see what they think.

| Mucusy loose stool w/blood @ the end can be colitis. It's inflammation of the colon or lower intestines, thus the bright red fresh blood. The mucus is from the intestinal lining being expelled. Princess had this & it required antibiotics to clear up. She also got a vitamin B shot & some sub-q fluids, they can get dehydrated really fast too. It doesn't always require antibiotics, but since it's recurring, I think your little one needs to be seen by a vet. Also need to rule out hookworms, as that can have the same symptoms as colitis. A strict high fiber, low fat & preferably no grain diet is recommended for dogs w/colitis. Absolutely no table scraps. Princess doesn't do well w/raw carrots, it gave her colitis, her colon identifies it as a foreign object. I slightly blanch all her veggies & dice it up into tiny pieces, much easier for her to digest. Hope GiGi will be ok! 4got to add that stress can also trigger colitis & it depletes the vitamin B, so they also need the vitamin B shot.

| [QUOTE=mimimomo;4298651] I think your little one needs to be seen by a vet. Also need to rule out hookworms, as that can have the same symptoms as colitis. . Hope GiGi will be ok! Yes I will be taking her to the vet....I am just going to watch her for a day or 2 to see how she is doing. I don't think she has hookworms...I have not seen anything weird in her stool. But she is not bouncing back to completely normal stool yet like before in just one day she was fine. I gave her some of her regular dog food and she had loose stool again...a little chicken and rice and no runny stool.....But I don't like it and I am worried. Might have to change her dog food but will see after her appointment. Other than that she is fine no dehydration or fever. But I am still worried. Tina

| I dropped a sample of poop to be tested at the Vet and GiGi is ok as far as that goes...spoke with the Vet and he said to continue with her feedings of chicken and rice when GiGi is ready to introduce her regular dog food slowly. He does not see the need for antibiotics....that is good but I hope it works. He is a very good vet so I trust his opinion and will be watching GiGi closely of course. Thanks for all your help. Tina

Yorkie Talker | When I first had Jules (last year) she had to have two rounds of antibiotics (oral meds) to get rid of her Giardia when I turned in a poop sample. Last month we got a new little boy Jared and his initial poop sample resulted in Coccidia... both Jules and Jared had loose, yogurt like poop. They both got a 3 day oral medication to help get rid of it and immediately by the 2nd day they both had dark hard stools. Will be turning in poop samples for both in about 2 weeks to see if they're in the clear. |

| My Abby never had any tummy troubles, but she gets into some cat poo (from the next door cats) and she will have runny poop for a day. I keep a eye on her and police the yard every morning but she's better at finding it than me! I keep up on her probiotics and pray the cats are healthy. |
