| Teeth Ok so my 6 year old Yorkie went to the vets today to have his teeth cleaned and when we picked him up we found out they took 9 teeth out! He now doesn't have his four front lower teeth. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Is this normal??? as we were brushing his teeth once a week and a dry food diet. |

| Yep, my girl had 9 teeth pulled at age 5. The front (incisors) tend to be the first to go. Brushing 1-2 times daily and doing cleanings as needed should take fare of it.

| Did you ever get any dental cleanings? ( At the Vet) Peanut is 6 years old and he has had… at least 4 dental cleanings, under anesthesia at the Vet. I try to brush, but he puts up a fight and it is so hard to get in the way back ( his mouth is very small). So with that, I make sure I get his professional dental cleanings. Every time he gets his teeth cleaned he gets a clean bill of health for a healthy mouth, no teeth pulled. I know Yorkies have bad teeth, I have noticed Peanut’s tarter builds up rather quickly. Yes brushing will help some, but it is not going to get all that plaque off. Under anesthesia cleanings are as needed and should be done. Moving forward I would try to brush more often. As much as you can. I would also maybe in 6 months check to see how much tarter has built up, then in another 6 months take him into the Vet to see if the Vet thinks he needs a cleaning. Try to see how long it takes for him to “need” a cleaning. Doing this will make sure your baby doesn't need any more teeth pulled on the next cleaning.

| George had 6 teeth out recently but I knew some would be coming out but only 2 I thought. Totally my own fault as I keep on putting it off.

| Thanks for all your responses. This is the first time he has ever been for a vet clean and I wish I hadn't let him go now I feel so bad for him. He was pretty good at letting me brush his teeth. The vet said it was because they were wobbly at the front surely it would have been ok to let them fall out themselves naturally? |

Now that he has a clean mouth, the important thing is to stay up on it. Try to brush as much as you can, keep an eye on the buildup.. I'm telling ya it builds up fast, if you do that he shouldn't need any more teeth pulled.. and that equals a Happy Mom!

| At 10 y.o, Princeton had 2 teeth pulled at his last vet visit and he had one pulled at the visit before that...and I am so worried because we aren't able to put him under to clean his teeth right now and he's 6 months overdue on his yearly cleaning. I've been brushing his teeth to try to help the situation, but I know he could use a cleaning. It seems like Yorkies are notorious for having bad teeth!! You definitely have to pay special attention to their dental care...more so than a lot of other breeds. I see lots of Yorkies on Petfinders who have had to get all of their teeth pulled out...some of them at a fairly young age...like 5 y.o. and then their poor little tongue hangs out, making them just that more adorable!! I am wondering if anyone's tried the stuff you add to their water. It looks like mouthwash and comes in various brands. Or if anyone has bought the "plaque buster" that is advertised on TV?!? I am wondering if either of those work?!? |

So Princeton has had a total of 3 teeth pulled at age 10? I would say that is great!! I have heard of non anesthesia teeth cleanings. I have not tried them personally. However if you think Princeton will sit there and let them scrape, then it might be worth a try. I know Peanut would never go for that, that is why I never tried it! He won’t even let his own Mother brush his teeth!! Since Princeton is overdue, can you call the Vet and see if there is anything you can do in the time being? Maybe he can try a non anesthesia teeth cleaning with a light sedation?? ( Just throwing some ideas out to you) I have tried the mouthwash type stuff that goes in the water.. I honestly didn't see any improvement. I even have some tarter spray that doesn't seem to do much. I think it is just as you said “Yorkies are notorious for having bad teeth
