| AAI surgery, need help with brace. Hi, I have a 1.5lb 7 month old Yorkie who was surrendered to a rescue I work with because she "couldn't walk right". I work at a vet clinic so I took the little girl in thinking I could help her. We found out she had AAI and we were able to raise the funds to get her the surgery. We are about 3 weeks post surgery and she is doing great but she HATES her brace. We have a finger brace under her chin with cotton and vet wrap holding it all together. It's serving its purpose but she won't leave it alone and it usually only last a couple days before having to redo it. I was wondering if anyone else who has had there baby have this surgery could tell me what kind of brace you used. I have looked online and I can't find anything I think would be small enough for her. This little baby is just way to small. |

| Hi there. I"m so sorry to hear your baby had to have surgery for AAI. I don't have any advice or tips for you, but I wanted you to know I'm praying for her. Also, there is a pup here named Georgie...he had that surgery. I sent a message to his Mom, screen name GeorgiesMomma, and asked her if she could come here to offer help and/or support. She's on vacation right now, but she may check in. Not sure. Edit: sorry..I was typing slowly. As mentioned above..this is who I was talking about. I didn't know Zhoie had it too. Hopefully one of them will be along to help.

| Thank you both so much. I could use all the advise I can get. She hates having her brace changed and I have to drive 2 hours to get it done because the vet I work for doesn't want to risk her hurting her neck while he is doing it. So I have to take her to her surgeon to get it done. I have had her almost 2 months and she was completely paralyzed by the time she finally got the surgery. 2 days after surgery she was up walking. She is my little fighter! |

| I sent a message to Tena with a link to this thread. I am sure she will be around to give you some tips. I had a pup with AAI but he could not have surgery ... I have not personally had experience with the surgery or brace. So happy to hear that this little baby is doing well after the surgery!

| Hi I am so happy to hear she is doing well and sorry I missed this. Georgie had AAI surgery in September 2011. He didn't have a brace after surgery. We were told to keep him quiet and he wasn't allowed to be active with the exception of walking outside to go potty. These babies are amazing! I know the feeling when you saw her walking the same happened with my sweet Georgie My husband and I cried because prior to surgery he couldn't even walk to go potty. Please feel free to PM me anytime to talk or any questions you have. I am praying for a speedy recovery and a long long healthy life for her Georgie is living proof its possible

| Just saw this and I'm thrilled this baby was fortune enough to get the surgery! It's amazing what the surgeons can do. Zhoie had AAI surgery at the vet school end I'd 2011, we didn't have to use a brace, but like GeorgiesMom, she had to have strict confinement for 12 full weeks. This is the most important part for full a successful and full recovery. We carried her out for potty. Sorry, I'm not much help, but I praise you four caring for this girl and giving her a chance!

| Thank y'all. She is doing really well. She is only 7 months so I have a hard time keeping her calm. We had to keep her sedated for the first couple weeks after surgery because she was so excited she could walk I couldn't keep her still. We did have some complications with the surgery and the screws didn't hold like they should have because her bones aren't fully developed. So they had to fuse together her first 3 vertebrae with pins and cement. Maybe that's why they have her in a brace. I just assumed that they all did with this surgery. I am so happy that your dogs are doing good after the surgery. I have been a nervous wreck about her and I have tried so hard not to get attached since there was a chance that the surgery wouldn't hold but I am head over heals for this little girl. It's nice getting to talk to people who have gone through the same thing. Give me hope she will pull through. |

| I don't have any suggestions, as I have not been through that, but wanted to stop in and tell you that this house is praying for your little girl. It is wonderful that she was able to get the surgery, and I'm sure she's really wanting to test out her newfound legs. Please give updates on her recovery. : ) |

The surgeons actually took a bone graft out of Zhoie's right shoulder to form a den, wired and cemented hers too. I've read on the AAI forum it's most important to keep up up the brace changes, so they can be checked for rubbing and infection due to the brace. Just step back and take a deep breath, you are doing great at caring for your girl! After a few weeks Zhoie was allowed out of total small cage confinement and could be kept in a pup stroller for remaining period of the 12 weeks. My office is in my home, so that was a great help. I strolled her room to room and parked her beside our bed every night, not quite as good as being in the big bed, but she was happier just being close to it. I'll check back later on to see how you are doing PM me if I can be of any help to you.

| I have an update on Miss Daisy. We went to her surgery Dr today and he said things are looking good. He LOVED the brace I made for her so they took their brace completely off and just left the one I made on. She has 2 more weeks in this brace and then they will see about taking it off. That will put us at 2 months post surgery. I did notice early this week a horrible smell coming from her mouth and knowing my Yorkie breed my first though was teeth. And it looks like its not good. We don't know for sure but we are guessing that she has some baby teeth in there that didn't come out and are now rotting. She is such a stinker though and she won't let us get a good look and we don't want to force her. I don't know what are options are for this obstacle yet. I really don't want to have to put her under again so soon. I have also noticed that she is walking really bow legged. Does anyone have any input on that? It seems like its one thing after another with this sweet girl. I hope she can make it though all this and get healthy. (Or as healthy as she can get being breed for size) |
