| Fletcher sick AGAIN! About 4x this past year, Fletcher has woken up with bloody diarrhea and vomiting. I can't figure out how it happens, he has not eaten anything unusual. This morning I woke up at 430am with him vomiting next to my head on the bed. DH asked if he wanted to go out and he jumped off the bed, ran down the hall and had some FOUL smelling diarrhea. DH thought it was him vomiting again, so he cleaned it up and back to bed they came. About 630am we heard a strange noise and DH jumped up out of bed, pulled back the covers and he had more really FOUL smelling diarrhea. We took him out and he vomited again outside 2x and walked around squatting like he was pooping. I saw nothing come out of either end though, but he had a slight streak of red blood on his back end. This has all happened 3x more in the last year and he's been to the vet for it each time. One time it was mild HGE, he was given SubQ fluids by the vet everyday for 3 days straight I would take him in. He was on canned prescription dog food for a week and a doggy maalox type tablet and an antibiotic. I'm guessing I'll just take him to the vet again today for all new stuff if he is still going this morning. How does this happen?? Nothing significant changed in his diet. It just suddenly randomly happens! Him & Dexter eat the same food from the same bag, go to the same places, etc... Dex never gets sick. Fletch gets this often now. I get so stressed out when he's sick and I'm at work. Luckily DH is home today to watch things. He's also limping a tiny bit. I can't really tell which leg/paw it is, but I think I can explain that. We did a road race yesterday, 2 miles. Normally they would do that w/o a problem at all, but it was HOT, maybe too hot. They ran about 1.5 miles and were pretty happy. We stopped to give them water all the time, but they could not finish the race, it was just too hot. Fletch finally just kept pulling DH to the side of the road to lay down, so we put them both in the kids stroller and they stayed there to finish the last 1/2 mile, then we had to walk 2 miles back to the car. They stayed in the stroller for 1 1/2 miles of that then walked the last 1/2 mile. So he may be hurting from all the exercise he got yesterday. I'll let him rest today and hope his limp goes away, but if we take him to the vet today I'll have the vet look at his legs too. Better safe than sorry right? UGH, I'm just sooo stressed by this intestinal thing he gets. It makes me nervous!

| It would make me nervous as well. My suggestion is to make an appointment as soon as possible with a board certified internal med specialist. So sorry...it is very upsetting to have a sick pup.

| Yes it is! Really? You think I should do that? He's almost 8 years old, he's never had this in his life, well once but they both got sick and the vet said it was from eating duck poop! But other than that, never anything for 6 years and then suddenly only Fletch 4x in 1 year. I've switched their food, now they are on Fromm white fish and potato for about 2 months now. Sudden sickness again today. I'm so frustrated. I wonder if I should just home cook their food at this point. DH said it was fine with him and he'd help me make a 10lb batch and store it in the freezer.

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | I certainly feel for Fletch. I would be having him checked out like Linda said. (It's a long shot but is there any chance he's sneaking wild mushrooms in the yard? These could make him very sick.)

| There are wild mushrooms occasionally but he's not really one to just eat things randomly anymore. However, anything is possible. I haven't seen him eat anything outside though. Im reading about HGE and how it can reoccur. I'm working myself up into a tizzy over here at work reading about this. DH is home with Fletch, so he's being watched carefully and DH will take him to the vet if it does not stop by noon, or he'll tell me and I'll take him in today. It's just that after 4x, we know how to treat HGE, which is all the vet will do, treat the symptoms, I can do that. I just didn't know if it's common to just recur this often and if it's not, then what is my next steps? I guess an internal med specialist would be it.

| First of all, true HGE cannot be treated at home. It is a serious emergency and requires hospitalization. Yes, I would see a specialist and sooner rather than later. I don't know if you saw my thread about Teddy Bear this year ... but here is it in case: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...ver-shunt.html I am not suggesting that Fletcher has a shunt...just bringing out the fact that he was around the same age and look at what happened! Specialists may cost more initially; but in my experience, they get to the problem quicker than many vets and it ends up cheaper in the long run imho. If you want to find a specialist in your area, here is a link to search: American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine > Home

| Oh yes it can be that!! So many of those things have bacteria on them. Bully sticks, pigs ears and the like!

| This is definitely serious. feeling better or not he really does need to see a vet today. If your vet can't get to the bottom of it then he does need to see a specialist. HGE is just an indication that something else is going on. When this happens, what bloodwork do they do?

| Since he's had recurring HGE in the past, I'd get him to the vet ASAP. IV fluid therary can support him through the fluid loss of vomiting and diarrhea. He may need more aggressive treatment, like IV fluids only for 4-6 days (plus meds), nothing by mouth for that long, then gradually reintroduce a bland diet then go to a regular diet. With blood loss, they can go into shock and pass on.

| So sorry to hear poor Fletcher is having these issues. With vomiting and bloody diarrhea I would see an internal specialist to see if the can figure out what is causing these issues. Sending prayers and best wishes for Fletcher.

| Yes Im going to call the vet, take him in and ask about a specialist. There is one near me, but I need a referral. I don't know what they do for bloodwork. I just know when I brought him in, they did an Xray to make sure there was no blockage or anything in his abdomen. Then they said they were doing bloodwork, they came back and said (this was last Nov) that he had HGE, and was borderline needing hospitalization. The vet told me if I stayed with him 24/7 and brought him everyday for SubQ fluids then he'd be ok with me keeping him home. So DH & I took turns working from home and taking him in for 3 days straight and he recovered nicely on meds. Thats all I know. I guess I'm not good at asking questions!

| Im trying not to get too worried right now, he's alert, his eyes are clear, he responds to us with tail wagging, ears up. He ran around the yard. I took away his food completely, and since he did have a pigs ear treat, I could possibly have a cause of his irritation. But I'm going to call and take him in anyways, just to be safe!

| Asking about the labs bc I wonder if a cPLI to rule out pancreatitis has ever been done. Pig ears are a definite trigger.
