| Ginger 10 years old....PLE and now Demodex It's been awhile since I've been able to update you on Ginger. He was diagnosed with PLE in 2010, and been on Budesonide since then. This past winter he began losing his fur and now is my Naked Baby. After visiting the dermotologist we learned he has demodex. From what I'm told as long as he is on Budesonide (a steroid) his immune system will be compromised and it will be extremely difficult to fix his skin issues. He was prescribed Ivermectin, preloaded in a syringe with increasing doses every other day. Being an overprotective mommy I did not start the Ivermectin due to possible side effects. Hence why I now call him "Naked Baby" the only pleace he has any hair coat is on his head and face. I am a wreck wondering what to do for him. He is in no obvious pain or discomfort, just has little fur. Has anyone ever had to deal with this? What do you think of giving him the Ivermectin? It just seems crazy to subject his little body to more medicine when he cannot ever get off the Budesonide so why attempt to put more meds in his little system. |

| I really have no advice, due to no knowledge of Gingers problems. Wanted to bump this up to see if others can help you out. Good luck, said a quick prayer for him and hope that you find the answer you seek.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | It sounds like you are in a bit of a quandary. I would like some more information if possible. Is your dog on a special diet? If not would you consider one? Are you supplementing the diet with anything that can help support the immune system? We do have other threads on here about ple. I would link some but I don't know how with this computer I have borrowed. I will ask ladyjane to come to this thread, she has much experience with Yorkie issues.

| Ginger Ginger has been on Royal Canin Potato/Rabbitt since his PLE diagnosis 2 years ago. He has done very well on it, no stomach issues, just skin problems which I'm told are because his immune system is compromised by the Budesonide. |

| I am so sorry. The only experience that I have had with demodex was with our 13 yrold pom. She had this because she had several other issues,we were in the process of trying to control the demodex when we lost her to the other health problems. It sounds like you have taken such good care of your baby. |

| Poor baby .. although it sounds like it is not bothering him. Demodex usually does not cause a lot of discomfort .. but it can when it is generalized which it sounds like his is. I honestly would not know what to do. I have a PLE pup and I would also be concerned, but I give her Heartgard monthly and that does have Ivermectin in it. The specialist said it is not a problem. I would probably not want her to have demodectic mange all over...but I would definitely have a lengthy discussion with the specialist and maybe even do a consult with a dermatologist before I would treat. Good luck...sorry I cannot be more helpful. This is not something I have seen. I have dealt with both things, but separately.

| I'm really surprised that you can give HeartGuard to your baby, I was told he could not have it because of the flavoring. Ginger is seeing a dermatologist for his skin issues but that's where the Ivermectin saga started. She said we had to get him off the Budesonide but obviously that can't happen, we tried lowering the dose but his PLE symptoms reappeared within days of the lower dose. Thank you for your reply, I'm sorry to hear you are dealing with PLE too. Wishing you and your baby well. |

| BTW, if your Ginger has had PLE since 2010 that is great! I love hearing success stories. This can be a very difficult condition to get under control. For some time after Cookie's diagnosis I was a wreck and ran her to the vet more often than probably needed to check her albumin levels. Don't know about you, but I did get a bit more comfortable with it...but it still is always in the back of my mind when she acts even a bit odd. She recently had a dental and then about 2 weeks later, tore a ligament in her knee and needed surgery. I was worried the anesthesia and the stress might set the PLE off even though they told me it would be ok. Thanks for your well wishes...I hope Ginger continues to do well. Please keep us posted on what you decide to do with the demodex.
